Usually February in the Southern Hemisphere is in the middle of summer and Milford Sound can be a scenic wonderland surrounded by towering cliffs and lofty mountains.
However in 2015 it got hit by a 'weather bomb' which broke a long drought. Milford Sound was blanketed in fog and snow BUT turned on a spectacular display of waterfalls.
I highly recommend taking a BUS, NOT self-driving. I found out that tourists regularly get killed or maimed on the road into Milford Sound. The drive itself takes many hours each way and is tiring. It's narrow, winding with spectacular views, so the driver either stares at the road or takes their eyes off the it and crashes due to inattention. It's even harder if you aren't used to driving on the LEFT side of the road, outside of the city, at speed, in slippery conditions.
Being rescued can take quite a long time as there are no towns nearby, its mountainous and getting a helicopter or rescue vehicles to a crash site can be difficult because of the steep high sides of the valleys.
