Kings and Generals' historical animated documentary series covering the Pacific War week by week continues. The initiative won at Midway and ratified at Guadalcanal and New Guinea now allowed the Allies to launch their next offensives deeper into the heart of the Japanese Empire, with new objectives. A military conference they needed to meet and discuss their course of action. So the US political and military leadership held a military conference in Washington in March of 1943 and it decided the fate of the war.

At 4:35, pretty sure you have the map of the wrong Washington and the conference wasn't in Washington State. When U.S. national-level leaders meet in "Washington," 99% of the time that is shorthand for Washington, District of Columbia, the national capital and King/Marshall's staffs' location. Army conference lead Wedemeyer worked for Marshall in DC, had just returned from traveling across the Pacific and "returned to Washington" with MacArthur's representative. Source: Official U.S. Army history "Strategic Planning For Coalition Warfare, 1943-1944," by Maurice Matloff.

Nice, we finally get to see the 1st Arakan campaign after several months. Up to this point, the only channel that has covered it in any sort of detail prior to this series was the World War 2 channel, but it mostly covered it in community posts. The month of April was extremely busy in North Africa and the Eastern fronts, so they didn't have the time to provide it with detailed graphics in the main episodes. So, it's nice to revisit this front with more screentime and resources to get a visual reference to the events.

No surprise there as MacArthur was largely inept. His connections in Washington and massive press propaganda machine lionised him during and post war. Among the worst Allied commanders in the War. I would count the series of strategic and tactical blunders by Yamamoto after Midway, as well as the IJA's general contempt for the capabilities of Allied forces, amongst the main culprits for Japan's loss of most of the Solomons, but not Mikawa, who was arguably the most brilliant Japanese fleet commander during WWII. It should be remembered Mikawa initiated and successfully carried out the night battle of Savo Island on his own, without specific orders or instructions from the Combined Fleet which was 2,700 miles away in Japan's Inland Sea at the time. He came under bitter criticism for withdrawing without having destroyed the American transports only after IJA failed to expel the Marines from their initial foothold on Guadalcanal as promised.
@mystikmind2005
@mystikmind2005 Жыл бұрын
No, the main reason the Japanese lost the Solomon's is because they could not adequately supply forces in the general region.... it was just pure arrogance that they put all that effort into trying to retake Guadalcanal despite this glaringly obvious problem.... A problem that was only going to intensify on many fronts as the war progressed. Napoleon once said "an army marches on its stomach" The Japanese said "an army marches on the willpower of being a superior race" ... well, no, they don't.... ironically, any supposed superior military force would only be so by way of superior logistics! Any military planner who is not blinded by arrogance knows this.

You do seem to be correct. I tracked down some book sources and I found the mention of the meeting in Washington in the book by John Miller, Jr. titled "Cartwheel: The Reduction of Rabaul". In there it mentions the trip to Washington and Pacific Conference. Going off of Chapter II Selecting Objectives, citation 13, it had references to "General Kenney Reports: A Personal History of the Pacific War" which is a book directly by George Kennedy (one of representatives from the SWPA). It mentions their trip to Washington and the many bases that they stopped at. Right before Washington, it mentioned their trip to the Wright Field Airbase in Ohio and then to Washington which highly does indicate this is Washington D.C. we are talking about.

Something I got out of your coverage of the CBI Theater is that the British and their Indian allies seem to lack the ability to counter the Japanese in any meaningful way up to this point. It just seems that the Japanese aren't nearly as capable when facing the Americans or even the Australians.
@jeffreyestahl
@jeffreyestahl Жыл бұрын
Part of it was numbers. In CBI, the IJA tended to use full brigades and divisions, whereas in New Guinea and the Solomons, they were throwing in 'detachments' that were little more than penny-packet assemblages of troops. The British, due to their deep involvement in Europe, were throwing in penny-packet detachments, and the US/Australians were putting in full brigades/divisions. Completely lopsided assignments.

The Australian led attack to victory in the Battle of the Bismarck Sea was very significant as it deprived the Japanese of ever being able to control New Guinea, which was essential for holding The Pacific and South East Asia. The difference between MacArthur and Nimitz was that Nimitz was trying to win a war, and MacArthur was trying to return to the Philippines. Also, Nimitz appointed competent comanders, told them what needed to be done, and let them do their jobs. MacArthur appointed "yes men" and told them how to do their jobs because he had to be the conquering hero.
@blockmasterscott

I've been to the Philippines numerous times, speak the language, and am married to a Filipina, and I know first hand that they love Americans because we did return to the Philippines. My wife's grandmother told me many times how happy she was when the Americans retook the Philippines. Her brother was a kid at the time, and he drove only American cars and flew an American flag in front of his house in California until the day he died. Oh no, we did the right thing by returning.
@n1k2jfan96
@n1k2jfan96 Жыл бұрын
Nimitz was, by nature, a team player and he prized healthy interservice relations so much it worried King at times that Nimitz might go too far to accommodate the Army. However when it came to the honor of the Navy Nimitz was fiercely protective. (It may have been a consequence of his experience with the Sampson-Schley controversy during his Annapolis years.) According to his aide Hal Lamar, when Nimitz was told that MacArthur would run the surrender ceremony, "Admiral Nimitz felt that the Navy was being slighted for the job they had done during the war and he told the Secretary of the Navy to inform President Truman that he would not attend." Realizing his mistake, Truman changed the orders and everyone got something: MacArthur ran the show, and Nimitz took the surrender for the United States.

@@blockmasterscott Nobody said it was wrong to return. The problem was that MacArthur made returning the ONLY goal to be pursued - even to the point of trying to take resources from other commands that would have shortened the war overall.
@redaug4212
@redaug4212 Жыл бұрын
@@jeffreyestahl It's actually a myth that centralized command in the Pacific would have shortened the war. Remember, this is early 1943. The Navy hadn't even breached the outer defensive perimeter of Japanese-held islands at this point. Moreover, the proposed invasion of Formosa was eventually rejected, and the plans for invading the Ryukyu Islands didn't materialize until mid-1944 when the SWPA was already in a position to begin operations in the Philippines. If it wasn't for MacArthur, the War Department would have siphoned off most Army and AAF assets for use in Europe, and the Navy's CPA forces would have had to contend with a much larger Japanese air, ground, and naval force.

Good show, some errors. MacArthur was an imperious man, but understood that he needed the Navy to fight. He also liked Halsey's warrior spirit, and was glad he was on his flank. By this point the Navy's efforts in the Solomon's was helping and was helped by Mac's efforts in New Guinea. The Japanese could not fight both zones at the same time. The confusion in overall command and strategy was caused by America's reluctance to have empires. Our Military was based on self-defense, so there was never any game-plan for what to do or what was wanted to do. Overall that system would be fine, as Japan was incapable of fending off our increasingly relentless attacks with so many units tied up in China, Burma and SE Asia.

Reluctance to have empires! LOL! Two questions: what are you smoking, and where can I get some? America had an empire in the Pacific since 1898 in the Spanish-American war. Seized the Philippines from Spain. Brutally put down the Filipinos when they tried to be free. America also kept territory in China and gunboats on the Yangtze river. Reluctance! Bahahaha...

That part about America being reluctant to have empires is BS because we were already undisputably an imperial power defending our interests.

British army performance in WW2 really...REALLY...highlights the impact of competency in command. There are a LOT of examples of complete fools in command of British units throughout the war. It is astonishing that a general as limited and flawed as Montgomery ended up being among the British best. For my money, Slim is probably one of the better performing generals...but he wasn't from the right class, so he was never given the chance to actually perform with proper support and supply. Heck, even in Burma...support was given really to Mountbatten rather than Slim... Indeed, the problem doesn't persist only in the British Army...even heroes of the British navy (like Cunningham) benefitted far more from dumb luck than anything tactically brilliant. ...and the less said about the British air force leadership, the better. Though in that, there really wasn't much talent to go around ANYWHERE in senior air leadership among any of the combatants.

Not true, this information isn't correct in the personalities, The president decides what and when based on information. The navy and army didn't decide on military targets, each goal was sent up the chain to President and he made the decision. Strategy Europe was he President's decision and the pacific was broken up into sectors of leadership. The President decided what was to get more support!

I have a game I play deciding where the narrator is from. To start with I thought it was a synthetic voice but dispensed with that fairly quickly. I settled on German for a while but recently I've started to think somewhere like Turkey. There's too many pronunciations they miss that a native speaker would just know. Plus, as you've pointed out, missing out on the occasional general knowledge things an English speaker would know. Still an excellent production though.
