The first coup plotters had a plan for Nigeria which is outlined in Major Ademoyega's (one of the coup plotters) book "Why we struck" the reason for the coup can be found the the corruption of the Nigeria government lead by Balewa who was viewed as a puppet of Sir Ahmadu Bello, At Independence the Igbos, Yorubas and mid-westerners held sway in the army and in the civil service because they were more educated. However Balewa's government reduce the qualifications for the army and ensured that many Northerners particular Fulani could enter the army with little or no education.they flood the army with uneducated and Ill disciplined soldiers, also the treatment of the Tiv of the Middle belt who wanted to break free from the domination, harassment and killings by the fulani, didn't go down well with the coup plotters because Balewa sent in soldiers to kill the protesting Tivs, Arrests Awolowo in the west and disrupt any protest by any group in the country. Muritala Mohammed lead the Northern coup in July 1966 that killed Igbo and mid-western soldiers in the army, they would call for parade Early in the morning in the North (Kaduna) once the soldiers reported for parade they were separated from their northern/ Western counterpart, disarmed and shot. Ironsi surrounded himself with northern soldiers because he grew up in the North. However it was this same soldiers who betrayed him and had him killed.

UK born Nigerian here. As an outsider learning the history of Nigeria, what efforts have been made to see to ensure justice has been served e.g. the Igbo massacre because surely you cannot expect people to stay where there wrongs have not been dealt with

God bless ojukwu for his good statement. That Hausa should return to their state instead of him to kill them for the innocent souls that the northerners has taken. But for the to return safely to their homes so that his berived brothers wont retaliate. Only for him to complain about it to gowon and gowon does nothing about it, and when he acts by creating more economy ground to compensate hos people gowon starts to attack. Till today igbos are still hated by all.

He made gowon his chief of amry staff. He made ademoyega his side man. And mostly the army of hos time was filled with igbos and yorubas having more ranks than the north. Why? Because the military is to have educated people but the north reject education. This was what angered the north. Because tafawa put hausa and Fulani that was not educated and till now they still but non educated for high rankes. Ironsi said the Nigerian citizen was to plot out their own constitution and not politicians.[ This is the way igbo do. Even before colonial. We plot out our own rule of law because we operate in core democracy]. He put to stop the crisis and killings in the west instantly. So he was drafting for a better Nigeria not a igbo wealth.
