HMS Eagle was an Audacious-class aircraft carrier of the Royal Navy, in service 1951-1972. Until the arrival of the Queen Elizabeth-class aircraft carriers in the 21st century, she and her sister, HMS Ark Royal were the two largest Royal Navy aircraft carriers ever built.
In this short film we follow the ship as it transits from Mombasa to Singapore. Its airgroup of fast-jets & helicopters was one of the most potent ever to put to sea by the Royal Navy.
At this time her airgroup consisted of Blackburn Buccaneer S.1s of 800 Naval Air Squadron, 899's deHavilland Sea Vixen FAW.2s, Supermarine Scimitar F.1 tanker aircraft of 800B Squadron, Fairey Gannet AEW.1 of 849 Squadron, D Flight and Westland Wessex HAS.1s of 820 Squadron.
This is an excellent look back in time to when the Royal Navy and her Fleet Air Arm was one of the most capable strike forces in the world.

Well it all looks like fun but that was far from the truth. We were on Beira Patrol, 3 months non stop at sea. It wasn't voluntary they sent the Regulating Staff down the messes and cleared everyone out to get up on the Flightdeck. For many that meant loss of sleep off watch when needed most, we worked 4 hours on watch then 4 hiurs off in the Enginerooms.. I had a broken big toe in a cast and made to wear flip flops and do the PT. Needless and thoughtless.

Yes I was a seaman gunner. Straight from HMS Cambridge to INTREPID. Only 17 but introduced to beer (csb) women and also middle watches. 😁😁

I was on the Ark. Nothing like trying to get some sleep before a watch with some prat on the next bunk playing a guitar. Lunatic asylum! The officers had it nice though, with their servants.

Oh wow, you’ve got XP924 featured in this! (Last surviving Sea Vixen) My grandfather was in 899 Sqn flying the Sea Vixen at the time, and was on Eagle from 65 to 66. This is fantastic - do you know which actual year the footage is from? I’d guess late 1965 by the narration at the beginning regarding the cruise to Singapore

Hi Alexandra. This film was made in 1966, when HMS Eagle was on a voyage from Mombasa to Singapore. Our editor was part of the Sea Vixen Team at Yeovilton with XP924.

Funnily enough, we spoke to that chap on Facebook a few months back. He's alive and kicking and still doing a bit of singing here and there.

Saw her from Changi Hospital in 66, at the end of this voyage. Met Concorde pilot Colin Morris in 2010, who told me he was flying Vixens on her then. Remember them well over Changi Juniors. Colin left the Fleet Air Arm the following year to join BOAC.

I see that the New Wave filming technic of the 1960s even influenced the makings of documentaries.

This brought back memories!!! I saw this on TV and it made my mind up to apply for the RN in 1967. Still remember the group doing the cover of Get off of my Cloud". First attempt failed. I was asked what would l do if I didn't get in. My cocky answer "I hadn't considered the possibility!" didn't help. Tried again a year later and joined Dartmouth in 1969. Went onboard Eagle in Malta in 1970 whilst serving in HMS London. Lots of ships were there for Exercise Limejug and, on completion, there was a Fleet Concert in Malta. My ship was involved in organising it and l worked back stage. The top of the bill act was Pan's People. Fell in love with Babs. Thank you for posting this.😊

My dad used to take me fishing in our tiny boat around Eagle when it was moared at the Hamoaze near Devonport. To me, it was immense that close up. Great growing up overlooking the Tamar and seeing a once very capable Royal Navy then.
