In episode 2, General Crook halts along the Rosebud after his Crow and Shoshone scouts discover Sioux war parties to the north. However, General Crook get the post-Civil War surprise of his life as the Sioux and Cheyenne warriors descend on his camp.
The Army and native auxiliaries stabilize the situation until Crook divides his force. What ensues is bloody and chaotic fighting and we will see that in Episode 3.
This is an interesting battle to study, which took place just a week before the Battle of the Little Bighorn

I grew up near the old Fort Custer. In 1967, at 12 years of age, my friend and I discovered the garbage dump from the fort in a coulee to the East. We had previously located the rifle range and collected many cartridges, slugs and even some live rounds. The dump was a treasure trove of old boot pieces, uniform shreds, bottles, dinner ware, many uniform buttons, and on rare occasion, a "US" Belt Buckle. The "US" Buckle was the most sought after treasure. We filled a few cardboard boxes of "loot" that Summer. We were family friends with the landowners so had an open invitation to go up whenever we wished. Sadly, when the road up the bluff was improved in the 70's, the dump site was buried in a "fill" location for the new road alignment.

This is the best documentary on the Battle of the Rosebud I have seen! Your use of satellite images of the battlefield overlayed with images of company positions complete with company officer names make the complex battle more understandable. I appreciate the addition of ground level topography pictures that compliment the satellite images and narration.

Great Job! I visited this battlefield alone around 1984, had the whole place to myself. To bad I hadn’t seen a very informative study like this one, I would have been better oriented about positions etc. Keep up the good work.

Great documentary. Realize communication was difficult but it seems like Custer by dispatch should have had knowledge of Crooks fight on the Rosebud with a large force of Warriors.

Excellent video! My family and I visited Rosebud Battlefield State Park in July 2023. We watched your video series on the battle before visiting the battlefield and it helped guide us to what we were seeing. The battlefield is huge and unlike Little Bighorn National Monument, there are few interpretive signs at Rosebud.

I just found you on You Tube, and I'm in "hog heaven". Your presentations and narratives are brilliant! The maps, the photos, and the occasional animations of old photos add such depth to the accounts. I will recommend you to some history buff friends of mine. I can't wait to see your series on the Battle of the Bulge.

Duly noted. This is from www.cmohs.org/medal/faqs. In the past, “Winner” might have been used, but out of respect for those who currently wear the Medal, please use the term “Recipient.” As best I can tell, there was no singular point when the shift occurred, but evidently, it changed gradually in the post-Vietnam War era.

I enjoy your history series very much. I do feel that your documentary would be better without the extremely loud music playing over the narration. I find it to be a distraction in what is otherwise an excellent production and it makes it hard to hear what you are saying.

Great documentary! However the Sioux did not refer to themselves as such! They were the LAKOTA! With differing bands that were under different war chiefs. When you say Sioux you do yourself and the history disservice, as the “Sioux” as you call them did not fight as a cohesive unit. Shame you didn’t mention the rotating Gatling effect the warriors on horse’s used continuously fire and minimize contact to themselves to keep a steady rate of fire on the crooks troops. this maneuver would be crucial to winning the Little Bighorn the next week. The Lakota and Cheyenne were also aware of the overheating barrels and jamming of the single shot rifles the US servicemen had. Crazy horse was noted as being one of the War Chiefs who utilized it to full effect by personally leading direct frontal charges to break skirmish lines. You should play some northern cree pow wow music to accurately reflect the mood of the warriors attack. That corny cavalry music needs some real American drums to silence it.
