Might be a bit late saying this, but this symphony is vastly underrated.

For anyone wondering, the painting in the video is done by Isaac Levitan.

Odd that this painting, reproduced in his wiki entry, is much more muted in color. I wonder which of the 2 repros is the more accurate?

@@calhouriThe painting is called "Over eternal rest".This reproduction is completely different from the original. The color scheme of the picture is really muted. The overall color of the picture is cold. The only bright spot is the yellow light in the Church window.

A glorious symphony, thoroughly Russian. A good case for suggesting the final movement gave rise to Dmitri Tiomkin and Elmer Bernstein's scores for Hollywood Westerns.

It is an amazing piece. I always felt that the brass theme from last movement sounds like a western theme. But of course, Borodins russian melodies are what maked him great, he knew hos to set the mood

This is what I was thinking. I heard a great deal of Copland in the 4th movement with a similar theme to Mussorgsky's Promenade from Pictures. It's funny, because Borodin predates both of these guys, so it would be fairer to say that Copland and Mussorgsky sound like Borodin. Glad I discovered this piece today, really wonderful.

Many of the great film composers were of Russian or Eastern European extraction, many were educated there, and many western composers were influenced by the Russian composers. That said, this entire symphony is full of strong and irregular rhythms, alternation of time signatures, even in the most lyrical passages, and aside from the scherzo of this one, I know of no other piece with the 1/1 time signature. Liszt admired this work, praising it as entirely new and unlike anything that had ever been written before.

I can't remember if it was Respighi's Fountains or Pines of Rome, but one of the two has a crazy time signature like 4/1 in it as well. When playing it, all I could wonder is "why isn't this just in 4/4?"

Actually, Mussorgsky and Borodin were contemporaries (along with Rimsky-Korsakov and Cesar Cui), and along with Mili Balakirev, were called "The Mighty Handful" or "The Five." Their contemporary, Tchaikovsky considered Borodin's primary career as a scientist to be a waste of his time and talent when he could have been writing more music. Borodin, on the other hand, said, "Respectable people don't write music or make love for a living."This from the son of the mistress of a Georgian Price.

I respect Tchaikovsky's comment, and also admire the talent of Borodin. So few are blessed with two magnificent talents...... we in science can appreciate the music, and envy the one who can escape to share his second passion with us. I wish I could express my emotion in composition as Borodin did.

And they got the TEMPO right, throughout ! Not every orchestra seems able to do so. Especially in that superb melody which kicks in at about 20.50.

Amazing piece considering he was a Sunday composer. My favorite of the handful of five is Mussorgsky, but Borodin is a very close second.

I played this whole symphony in youth orchestra. 1st bassoon and only bassoon. This piece was so tough for me because I was only a junior and didn't play any orchestral piece this difficult. But it made everything else so much easier for me. I wish I could play this again because now I'm a bassoon performance major in college.

Ansermet is GREAT! Tempo on the Finale is PERFECT! Most play this movement too fast. and lose the fabulous interplay and weaving of foreground and background elements.
