I got my period when I was 10 years old. My mom simply said, "you drink a lot of dairy, that makes sense." ???????? like both my parents were extremely intelligent and educated pharmacists and they didn't even care. I was also extremely overweight my entire life, and they never once tried to get me to eat more plants. Now that I'm vegan (5 years in) they can't help but ask me every couple of months if I am supplementing with all sorts of random vitamins and nutrients. It's like, why weren't you worried when I was actually unhealthy; eating McDonald's, pizza hut, dominos, extremely unhealthy mexican food, and steak, practically on rotation? SMH 🤦🏼♀️

Id just like to use this actually viewable comment to point out a couple problems with weighing the validity of this argument against Kurzgesagt’s, even if you don’t want to spend time exhaustively pouring over myriads of studies. Kurzgesagt is a general-science channel with topics researched by a team of scientists likely having different viewpoints and paradigms. This video is made by a single person who has the paradigm of a vegan and is advocating for a topic that promotes veganism. I did a fair amount of research after watching both videos, but there’s no reason the evidence I found is any better than this vid’s producer. There is, however, significantly more reason to believe that a team of unbiased scientists that consistently produces high quality videos on diverse topics has more reliable data collection than either this content creator or I could produce, and unlike both of us (Me, a non-vegan and this creator, a very vocal and strong-feeling vegan), it is very unlikely Kurzgesagt has a hidden agenda given that it’s channel’s success isn’t rooted in the vegan community. This doesn’t confirm that one channel is right, but it does mean that, without doing massive amounts of independent and verifiably unbiased research, it is far more reasonable to trust Kurzgesagt than this, or frankly most other channels, out there.

@@kurzgesagt I read most of your responses and read your conclusion. From my understanding, it appears that you are setting a very high bar by only looking for casual studies when, as you point out, this is very hard when nutrition is so complex. When it comes to practical advice, we don't always have that luxury and correlation studies are very important in providing guidance where we would otherwise not have any. To neglect those correlations without at least some theoretical justification for it (such as fat swapping where if people are not consuming dairy, in the global north, where most nutritional studies focus on, then they are likely eating more meat), then you would be just ignoring data that, in this case, does not fit your world view. Just because there is no causal evidence (that you could find at least), does not mean there is no strong cause for concern (based on the data you have).

Early menses is not caused by milk. That's a preposterous claim. It's cause by many factors, the most important of which is the tremendous increase in the use of plastics and the BPA used in plastic to keep it pliable. BPA mimics female hormones and has been implicated in early menstruation in girls. The consumption of processed carbohydrates is another huge factor regarding this problem. High levels of insulin caused by eating refined carbs throw the hormonal balance of people all out of wack, and that in turn causes all kinds of metabolic problems, including early puberty in girls and low sperm counts in men. Add unhealthful fats into the mix and you have the real cause. The Masai tribe in Africa eats little else but cow blood and milk mixed together and the average age of girls beginning menstruation is around 15 or16 years of age. Explain that.
@banishedfromthedwarfplanet5304 жыл бұрын
Frej A.> You can assume any nonsense you want, but that doesn't change the fact you don't know what you're talking about. I did not "fly around" the link between obesity and early puberty. What do you think is a major cause of obesity? Yes, it's BPA in plastic and the consumption of processed carbs that throw off hormonal balance, so your argument was phony and lacking in common knowledge. I guess you are not familiar with the fact that excess estrogen is a major cause of obesity. I just assumed anyone reading my post would be knowledgeable enough to know about the link between BPA in plastics and processed carbs and being overweight. But you come along and make yourself look dumb. The Masai, who drink milk by the gallon, don't die from degenerative diseases. They die from communicable bacterial and viral infections, and injury from their strenuous lifestyle. Cancer is almost unheard of among them, and, as I said, the girls don't have early puberty problems. Any more straw man arguments you want to throw at me?

I read a good article about this. Basically people feel guilty about eating meat when vegans are around, and that makes them defensive. When vegans aren't there, they're in the comfortable 'mainstream diet' category. As soon as a vegan shows up they're pushed into the uncomfortable 'meat eater' category where they're forced to acknowledge the inconsistency between most people's claims to love animals and the fact that they eat meat. I remember hearing even as a kid, studies on the news about how hormones in milk and chicken are linked to why girls are starting menstruation earlier and earlier. Of course, not being underweight and malnourished helps, but the ages that girls are now having them (as early as 9-10) are detrimental to evolution and survival as their bodies and minds are nowhere near ready for sex and pregnancy and birth. I wonder if there's any studies done on nations with high milk/animal product consumption vs low consumption nations and when girls on average have their menarche. I wouldn't be surprised if it starts in western countries much earlier than in, say, middle eastern and south Aidan countries (I would say East Asian as well but they have started their massive meat phase due to westernization and wealth).

I’ve also had a lot more criticism from people about my vegan diet than about my excessive smoking and drinking habit (both of which I have significantly cut down to just occasions). I also still get criticised about my diet by people who still smoke and drink.

I saw Dr Gregors vid on infertility in women from dairy consumption just this month, so it made me so mad when i saw this kurzgesagt video because of their sources and claims which gives a message that its ok to drink milk except the effect on environment and animal welfare but otherwise drink milk you'll be fine 😡
@haley29184 жыл бұрын
I’m not, nor will I likely ever be, convinced dairy is remotely a health food. Since I’ve cut out dairy (and meat), my skin has cleared up, I don’t get cystic acne anymore, it’s incredibly easy to maintain a healthy weight, and I can breathe so much better (dairy can cause sinus problems in some people). Not to mention my mood swings/anxiety has gone down to nearly zero. Besides, why bother with dairy when healthier substitutes are so easy to come by? And even if you can’t find many substitutes, why is it so necessary to you? Eating a specific food, such as cheese or yogurt or whatever, isn’t everything.

At the very least, the video sort of planted a seed on the ethical implications of milk consumption despite its seemingly "unbiased" portrayal of its health effects. Unfortunately, most of the audience will probably just not give a damn and continue breathing cheese and dairy. But those who care about ethics but weren't aware of the ethical implications would likely think more deeply about the matter. Hopefully.

I like how you included the whole clip (16:45) where they said milk was “basically torture.” Combine that with “you do not need to drink milk to be healthy” (11:17) and I fail to see how they can conclude “milk is complicated.” The only thing complicated is the mental gymnastics required to find the conclusion from their own statements complicated.
@deepakhiranandani64884 жыл бұрын
Well said. That's the only thing complicated. 😊
@ameliap0ndd4 жыл бұрын
kursgesagt tries to look at it from a balanced perspective, the complex part is that billions of people drink this stuff and it is intertwined into our culture and history, to ignore that is almost disrespectful to human progression and culture. Asking billions of people to suddenly stop a centuries long tradition is difficult, despite the torture, rape and murder that comes with it, it is almost impossible in our current world where the majority don't have the privilege that we have to choose what they get to eat/drink. I believe that is why they approach it from a nuanced, subtle way, rather than choosing one side and only showing that
@Nick_Lyston4 жыл бұрын
@ameliap0ndd Well, I think presenting nuance can be more persuasive, so if they are all secretly vegan using this as a technique designed to patronize the plebeian masses I suppose I cannot object. That said, your explanation IS complex, speaking more to the complex psychology of moral rationalization rather than moral reasoning grounded in logic and introspection. The moral conclusion itself remains simple, a young child could comprehend it. If something is unnecessary. and inflicts torture on another, you shouldn’t do it. Also, beware of using the word privilege to justify the immoral behavior of others. Lack of privilege is not a blank check to murder, even if it might mitigate the harshness of the condemnation. And certainly, no group is less privileged than these farm animals, so to allow the comparatively more privileged to exploit them to death, and to use this as justification for the most privileged to do likewise obviates your entire position. It is a snake eating its own tail.
@Nick_Lyston4 жыл бұрын
And to add one more thing, it is patronizing to imply that more traditional cultures lack the capacity to comprehend and evolve their practices to comply with basic principles of justice, ones that even young children (of all cultures) immediately grasp. The only way we can achieve universal respect and a post-racial global society it to hold everyone up to a basic standard of fairness and universal accountability.

But even though it contains 1%, isn't most of it destroyed in our stomach? As they quote in the Kurzgesagt video. I thought most birth control pills are coated, so it doesn't get destroyed by the low pH. (Asking this purely out of curiosity, a friendly 'no' with some info if I am wrong would be much appreciated)

Jason Davis look man I’ve been vegan for years and I know where you‘re coming from. Especially in the beginning it can seem like there is endless evidence that meat/dairy is super dangerous and that we‘ve been taught lies our whole life. But please don‘t make the mistake and believe everything you read now, just like you believed everything you‘ve heard when you were smaller. The more I learn about nutrition (and I am studying nutrition science at the moment) the more I get a grasp at how complex all of this is. It‘s not black and white. Humans aren‘t carnivores and humans aren‘t herbivores. We‘re clear omnivores, or maybe even a new category (cooky-vore?) because we got used to cooked food. And I don‘t want to make a case for it, again, I’ve been vegan for more than 3 years, but eating meat doesn‘t cause diseases per se. There are countless factors - processed food, sedentary lifestyle, stress, etc.. All those play a role. You can also find studies on people on ketogenic diets (which are basically super heavy in eggs, bacon and butter) who seem to be totally healthy. Even the cholesterol topic is super complicated, it’s more than just the ldl, but rather the particle size and more factors. Also, many nutrients like heme iron, zinc, vitamin a and others are more bioavailable through animal products. Fiber (which is exclusively found in plants) can even lead to nutrients being less easily absorbed. Now, I was just playing devils advocate - just to point out that there are far better arguments in favor of veganism than health (or the myth that we‘re herbivores). Like ethics.

Ive seen little girls get their period at 8... i always thought it was the cows milk. I still ate cheese, and yogurt because the doctors were recommending it even though im lactose intolerant. I got my period at a normal time at 14. Im glad i didn't drink that much milk growing up. Glad to be vegan now.
