Why did I suddenly imagine the Skavenslaves rising up in a communist revolution to create the Skaven's People's Republic?

oddly that's a thing in 40k orks. The Red Gobbo, is the leader of the Gretchin Revolutionary Commitee.

The biggest revolution the Skaven had was when a Skavenslave named Skabbicus inspired his fellows to rise against thier cruel overlords in search of a better life. Skabbicus turned the Slaves into such a powerful force that not even the Stormvermin elite could break them...that is until the Council Of Thirteen issued a pardon for all Slaves who stood down and pointed out thier leader. According to Skaven History (if its to be believed at all) over 1000 Skavenslaves pointed out Skabbicus and watched as thier former commander was torn down and eaten. Pretty much immedietly afterwards any thoughts of a pardon were forgotten and the remaining slaves were devoured for thier treachery. Production dropped for months in Skavenblight (Skaven Capital) but everyone ate well for that period of time lol

There actually was a slave rebellion in warhammer lore, a pretty big one but then the council of thirteen gave amnesty to any that pointed out the leader, killed the leader then killed the rest of the slaves

That sounds like it would be a fairly interesting Skaven faction you could play as. If Skaven culture is very deviant to begin with, such a thing would not be too far fetched. Since many Skaven are collectivist in nature, it would definitely give them a less despotic alternative to leadership, assuming the communism they adopt is of the libertarian socialist type (anarcho communism) rather than the authoritarian socialist type (soviet communism). Not to say they would be completely good if they adopt anarcho-communism since they would view everyone else as a potential threat that could destroy their way of life, so to remedy that they would be on a mission to spread the communist revolution across the globe, by brutal methods of course.

Yes I know they are and have been in other area's but skaveblight is in the Old World! CA did state that future parts will be stand alone, would that that mean Skaven cannot interact with the Old World, Would love an opinion from Arch on that!

+Davina Q Well if Skaven literally aren't in the first game, then they will probably only be able to interact with a small part of the Old World, with Skavenblight/Tilea/Estalia being the Northwest corner of the 2nd map. I'm going to assume there will be some overlap between expansions in regards to the maps. If you dont own the first game but own the 2nd, you will not be able to interact with most of the Old World obviously. But I dont think it will be super common for someone to own one but not the other if they want the full Warhammer experience. As I say in the video, I find it likely that Skaven WILL be in the first game at some point, as their capital city is on the map for the first game

It would be nice if empire building was extremely difficult due to Skaven poor civil obedience but the campaign had goals. Other than 'own a bunch of territories'. A great campaign would be trying to fill all twelve seats at the council of thirteen with generals from your own faction by leveling them up in battles.

To be honest, I thought Skaven were rats mutated by warpstone. As far as I remembered, their technology (and even aspects of their society) works around warpstone. But then again it was years since I brushed up on my Warhammer lore.

in empire total war if you leave pheasants pissed of but not to scared they strike, (down tools) , then riot then revolt. With Shaven you could have the same mechanics as the riots if your doing well (some dead a building damaged) then a note from a underling saying someone tried to rebel it's cool we killed them all a buildings damaged. Then a more standard one what would lead to rebellion if your not handling moral.

Thanks! I have not, I've been focusing mostly on factions that havent made it into the Total War Warhammer trilogy yet. So far I've done Skaven, Wood Elves, Lizardmen, Tomb Kings, and Dark Elves. High Elves and Daemons of Chaos are likely next on the agenda in terms of the Lore/Army/Tactics series, but itll probably be a bit before either goes up

What about "Giant Rats" ? they are utterly common as well(if not, even more than clan rats), they were fast in the table top game(kinda skaven's calvary, but not as fast as wolfs or horses).. They could be a great feature and a cheaper unit to hammer and anvil next to the Rat ogres? :) Thinking about your point by elite units could have their own free slave unit could be combined somehow with smaller rat swarms? in the tabletop they are used only as meat shield as well, but for cinematics it would look great with the man-sized rats followed by the smaller "normal" sized rats.. Anyway keep it up indy! :)

+kenny jensen There were some Skaven units I didnt talk about because that particular role had already been filled out by a unit that does it better. I'm honestly not sure if Rat Swarms or Giants rats will make it into the game, they're kind of a departure from the special units we've seen so far. My understanding is slave rats are THE go to tarpit for Skaven and do it better than the other meatshield units. I do agree though, seeing a combined force of giant rats and rat swarm would be pretty cool. Thanks :)

+Steven Davis There are some parallels to be made I guess. Obviously lots of Warhammer fantasy is based off Tolkien's works. I just dont think the races as a whole are super similar honestly. I dont think betrayal really defines Uruk-Hai although I'm sure there are some examples. And they certainly arent cowardly. And they're 6 foot tall slabs of muscle and bone and armor, while most Skaven weigh like 70 pounds sopping wet. I can see some more parallels between Stormvermin and Uruk-Hai though, thats not a bad comparison.

I've started reading the Brunner the Bounty Hunter Omnibus, and that is a very good series of mini novels all rolled into one book. I would also recommend the Malus Darkblade omnibus. Its 3 novels in one. They are well written books that will introduce you to the world of Warhammer quite nicely

I thought you were going to discuss it ... but all the ranged I heard about is the jezalock and the ratlings and maybe the gutter runners a bit, but no arty. Think the warplock arty is diff from the rest as it has a straight firing line, so it will be get blocked by terrain pretty fast, but this also causes it to have the fastest bullet speed of all the arties. I played mark of chaos en skaven were pretty fun, seeing as they could scale walls without ladders and towers

The Skaven represent all the negative personality traits of humans. Their selfishness and greed is one of the most interesting things I find about them. They mirror the humans in a way that shows us these Negative emotions at their purest. I think you have tied them down pretty well here. For them to get the Skaven right, they need to address the tiers of the Skaven in a much more dramatic way. Instead of trying to create a middle ground for the Skaven, where they have alternatives to more expenisve units, they should stick to having a very low tier (slave rats and clan rats) and a very high tier (Rat Ogres, Rat-ling guns, Storm Vermin). This will force players to have a small force of elite units that do the damage, and the rest filled in by the fodder.

+milkandcookiesTW Yes, it would be a very realistic trait to give them. I think the main way to look at them is as a target unit and not a meatshield. Peasants in M2tw were more for meatshields. But you could put a spear militia in sciltron and it would hold almost to the last man.

My idea for Ork morale was simply to give them poor base morale but give every squad the "Mob rule" a 40m plus to leadership that stacks based on unit size, say +1 per 10 Ork models. So 5 full strength units of 100 give each other +50 morale but 5 30% units only get +15. Same thing could be applied to Skaven since Orks are already made.

I feel like the Horned Rat would probably be the Chaos god of survival. Just as the chaos gods all require something to exist (Tzeench needs something to exist in order for him to exist himself, Nurgle needs life in order to exist, Khorne needs blood and anger in order to exist, Slaanesh needs pleasure in order to exist), the Horned Rat needs will in order to exist. Especially the will to live.

I was thinking of what would make a cool thanquol and here is what I came up with: Powerful caster. (duh) Reduced campaign map fog of war in regards to territory owned by humans. I'm not sure how easy this would be to implement, but it would be cute flavor wise because thanquol is quite educated about humans. For example he is literate in whatever language the Empire uses. Boneripper- A mount that is capable of dying in battle with thanquol on it without thanquol dying as well. This would be pretty sweet, since Boneripper dying is kind of a running gag in the books. Boneripper will be more powerful than a typical rat ogre mount, and may have a projectile ability (such as a tear shaped fire attack ability). If boneripper dies, he remains dead until thanquol's army replenishes. Diplomatic penalty with Clan Skrye because Thanquol and Ikit Claw dislike each other. There is a problem with thanquol being a legendary lord in the Eye of the Vortex Campaign. "The Grey Seerer" clan (Clan Scruten I assume) sends armies to stop you so they don't get sacrificed to the Horned Rat. Thanquol is a grey seerer, and if he is affiliated with a 'clan', I assume it'd be Clan Scruten. So the cut scenes and stuff might need to be tweaked.

i, myself as an old guard vet. tabletop collector and player have to disagree with some of the statement you made regarding endtimes and oldplayers hating them. I dont hate the endtimes because it destroyed the old world with which i grew up with, it gives me goosebumps to a certain degree but i would be okay with it especially since i see the need of gw to remake their tabletop line inorder for it to stop the dwindleling of their profits and to secure the future of warhammer tabletop. so that for one thing what i do hate are 2 little pest called crudace and ward and honest for godssake if i had known what stupidity and destruction they will bring upon the fantasy world i grew up with when i was 14 or 16, i have little to no doubt that at that time with my not jet fully delevoped brain i would have probably killed them both (not now or in future!!). And honestly they deserve all the hate they get, but so does gamesworkshop, i mean letting someone who wont work for you very long anymore write a important main part of what will be the foundation of you future sucess and earnings,makes me speachless. they deserve getting their ass handed to them which according to my knowledge they do, since those idiots also didnt loan but sold their copright brand to publisher's such as CA for the whole corresponding project meaning 1 fat paycheck+ a few profitshares from the sale of the maingame instead of boatloads of royalities which lets be honest with the whole DLC package is beyond stupid ..... or clever if seen from the point of view of CA especially since according to my knowledge they announced the 2 installment before TWW was taking to the skies, when everyone whas whining about the paywalls and nagging about the game in general. So i would venture a guess and say same deal at even better conditions for CA in case of the copyright. So i dont hate the end times i hate the careless and loveless attitude with which it was implemented and the people for doing it including GW for being shortsighted navie and dimwitted in regards to human nature and the nature of a few very special HUMANS. oh yeah AND i HATE AGE OF SIGMAR, but that is a whole other kind of story :)

When you get into the gritty politics of warhammer at the 30min mark, personally I wasn't really bothered by the civil war mechanic or even the public order penalties in warhammer, in fact I always found that kind of thing interesting, the thing I think you nailed on the head however, was "I don't want to see weak/crappy units late game that's really boring" That statement I agree with wholeheartedly. Total war tends to get boring for me late game because the AI usually churns out weak infantry and spams it, and while it's viable early game when you yourself don't have the good stuff, late game it just leads to one big steam role which ruins late game play for me. SO that, I agree with and hope CA heard.

Very late to the party, but something that occurred to me about Queek: he's the leader of the third faction fighting over Karak Eight Peaks, so they could make him a separate faction and reused the mechanics regarding controlling Eight Peaks from The King and the Warlord for him. Even if they don't, I really want to see him as the second legendary lord (as you say, Thanquol is almost certain as the first) as he's one of my favourite Skaven characters.

The thing I want to see for their campaign. Is to lose the need to capture towns, and instead have the ability to recruit globally, at local region cost. As long as the region has a low enough public order.

My top 2 factions are Skaven being number 1, and chaos dwarves being number 2. Hopefully theres a freeLC for moussillon so we got a bretonnian factions with vampiric and undead tendencies. I already got a mod for that and an undead faction with mutant versions of bretonnian troops is awesome. Plus i added a mod that adds a nice chunk of Tomb Kings troops to undead factions.

Arguably the Vermintide was the 'best' of all the Endtime scenarios, something that was forever hinted at that finally got to pass in all it's apocalyptic glory, and the source of arguably one of the best survival style games of 2016.

this has always been, quality and quantity, my favorite of your videos. That aside i think for me ideally, for a lore and gameplay perspective many of the elite melee troops should have slaves attached. like a squad of storm skaven should be 30 or 40, mixed in with a unit of 120 slave rats. that way they are a part of the gameplay in all aspects. Got the idea from how in the battle for middle earth you could combine units for unique bonuses.

That would be very cool, I'd be down for that. I dont think CA will go that direction, but I do hope they make meatshield and horde tactics very important with the Skaven when they release. I'm glad you enjoyed this one! Funny to go back only a short year and see how much my videos have changed

Definitely agree with the legendary lord choices. Other skaven just aren't as well featured imo. Queek in particular is my personal choice, he could have a banner like Grimgor to turn a unit of stormvermin into his red guard as well as having the various skull trophies as his quest battles.

Queek is one of the characters I am most looking forward to seeing in the trilogy. His model is amazing, and if CA does him justice, his voice acting will be as well. Same thing goes for Thanquol, cant wait to see Boneripper

I think that skavens should have 10 extra army slots only for skaven slaves just to hammer the whole tide of rats harder (only slaves though 10 extra strong units would be too OP)

I don't get why people like the Skaven. They are the most undesirable faction I can think of. I would never root for a backstabbing race of a giant rats.

Problem with the "strength in numbers" and "lead from the back" is that, combined they are OP when it comes to morale. Something to exploit in multiplayer and the ai can heavily exploit this.

I'd be fine with AI exploiting if it meant they were actually challenging and scary to fight against. You're right, it probably wont work exactly like this in Total War Warhammer for a variety of reasons, one of those being balance. We'll see how CA handles Skaven when they release

I think the Skaaven should be established like the empire with each clan getting dominion over small tracks of land with the option of conquest or integration.

When i first heard that total war was doing warhammer for its next game i was sceptical that creative assembly made the wrong move but now i know this is possibly the best move for total war.

Owen Billington I would say it was a good move for warhammer also. 40k isn't doing good, people don't like aos very much from what I understand. Maybe old world rejuvenation is the way war hammer could make a return. I know I'd have to buy a few army's to have some fun with on the weekends if they did something like that.
