Hi Eric been a subscriber & fan for few yrs now & look forward to all new videos you make for us, Love the way you & your dad are upgrading the farm. Always loved spending time on aunt & uncle's dairy farm in upstate ny as a kid it was just all fun for me when I was in early 20s spent a week back there & realized how hard the entire family actually worked from before sun up untill well after dark, so i have nothing but respect for you all working the farm. If you have time to reply what's the date/month you guys are shooting for to have robot system up & running?

@@niklasthelen8662 I was just field scouting this weekend, and you can see a bunch of farmers lucked out. Corn prices were so bad in the fall, that a lot of people put winter wheat in their fields that would have been corn, and the winter wheat actually looks pretty good. Most of the existing corn fields around here, either look absolutely terrible, or are fallow, because farmers couldn't get into them because of all the rain we've had.

Hey Eric, amazing to see the project coming together! Great content. l have a 54 cow dairy in central Mn. We have two 24x 70 silos. When we put new unloaders in,we always add a second set of knives on the augers, this makes for much longer auger life! Those you r putting in look very similar! A tip from one young farmer to another! Once the knives get thin and wore dwn,we are able to put another two sets on. When they are wore dwn its time for a new auger at that point! Greatly extends auger life!!

Really impressed with those silo unloaders. I live in western PA and we sometimes get snow drifts 3 or 4 feet deep around silos. Seems they mounted the unloader motors very low to the ground on the silos. Hate for them to get buried in snow and ice in the winter.

@@MorganOtt-ne1qj Not the motor located at the top of the unloader inside the silo. But the motors that are mounted on the outside of the silo that are used is to raise and lower the unloaders. @@tomyoung8719 I gotcha. I guess they will cross that bridge when they get to it. But the winches won't have to make much more than a half a turn, max, each feeding cycle. Probably not that much in an entire day. Sealed motors aren't bothered much by moisture anymore. Good point, though! 👍

I bet the slats are cooler than the stall and that’s why the cow sits there. just a guess. Love the video❤ thank you. Also, I heard this thing to help reduce energy energy cost is used in barn sometimes it’s called earth tubes. It’s investment heavy and not used by very many people but energy cost are very low. It uses fans. They bury pipes underground, and their specific and angle to it and other tricks, but you pump air through it. This pulls the temperature of the ground into the air so in the summer the air coming out of it is cooler than outside and in the winter it’s warmer. It has to be buried below the freeze line so they say and it is a big investment to bury a line under there, but the payoff is long-term. It could be something like 10° cooler for the cows or more. There’s another farm that does it researched on the Internet. It’s obviously all about cost though, and I don’t know the costs and benefits details just know the theory A farmer has equipment typically that can be used to dig lines as well as the space. It’s not real practical for houses without land, it could take a few hundred feet to cool down a barn or warm it up. Like 500

I seem to recall that you had a misting system in the barns to help keep the cows cooler. Do you still have that, and how much difference does it make when the temps have been so high? Now that you have the new silos, the bunks could be made into swimming pools for the cows to enjoy and relax in during the hot summer months. Put a deck around them, some ramps going in, get some big floaties and air mattresses, etc. A wonderful summer resort area for the herd. I just got to the part of the video about the misters, so disregard the first part of this comment. Obviously you still have them.

Dairy farming . Given a healthy well fed cow that is not stressed and can lay down in comfort gives the most milk. Being kept all their life in a barn on concrete slats, put in calf as soon as its milk production dips and sold off to slaughter as soon as they fail to get in calf or have health issues...This is basically factory farming. The good and bad . We all want cheap milk and dairy products. What age are calves weaned ? Where do your bull calves go? What about hoof care ? I respect the hard work and care you guys are doing. Where do you sell your milk ? How is the price in Canada?
@10thgenerationdairyman61
@10thgenerationdairyman61 Ай бұрын
We wean calves at 8 weeks as they transition to a grain diet and then to a forage diet at around 3 months. Bull calves are sold and raised for beef. We trim hooves and run foot baths to prevent disease. Foot health is a big priority for us, we have room for improvement there. I have no problem with cows being on pasture, but if we switched to a pasture based system and left our calves with the mothers early lactation and also stopped breeding cows so that they calved once a year, we would have to downsize majorly because of lack of land availably near our farm. Also per cow production with drop at least by half to my estimation. I would lose the farm very quickly. We are located in Pennsylvania in the U.S., milk prices have been solid over the past couple years.

@@10thgenerationdairyman61 thank you for your time explaining this ..I do enjoy your videos . I was brought up on a small dairy farm 50 milking cows with followers and some beef cattle. On a hundred acres. It was a financial struggle and 7 days a week work of course. The money went out of milk and made it uneconomical. Supermarkets driving down the price per litre. Like yourselves the only way to survive is to be super efficient . Best wishes to you and your family.
