They avoid human contact- though they tend to wander into residential areas because of the mass destruction of habitat. Given this spider's extremely limited range- its natural habitat is easily intruded upon by human development. Therefore, contact with this species is likely to increase over time by our fault, not the spiders.

I saw a woman who was bitten in the early 1980s before anti-venom for the funnel web was widely distributed in Australia. She barely survived the bite. She had lost large hunks of flesh ...She said she had violent seizures for months and that she would inadvertently foam at the mouth. As she talked she was shivering as if cold, and said she was told the shaking was probably permanent. I was impressed by her optimism when she said "At least I wasn't allergic to the venom ...I probably would be dead."

It's not the most venomous spider in the world - There is an antivenom available for all species of Atrax, including A. Robustus. The most venomous spider in the world is actually Phoneutria bahiensis - The brazillian wandering spider AKA the banana spider, which has a venom that is guaranteed to kill a human 100% of the time if bitten, and for which there is no definitive medical treatment other than supportive care while you die.

Growing up in the mountains west of Sydney there were thousands of funnel webs around. Under my swing in a tree was spider holes every 20 cm apart, I used to run bare foot through the forests and luckily was never bit. They are quite reclusive spiders, once there were 5 found in my school library in one day amongst the cushions piled in the corners. We even had to spray the legs of the beds with surface spray, and have no long blankets that could be crawled up. Mostly they stick to themselves though and prefer not to be bothered. I later moved to Queensland and had a whistling spider on my neck when I woke up, not thinking I grabbed it and threw it across the bed, so lucky not bit, but it was huge a full hand full. Had many huntsman on me too but never been bit.

Please don't demonise the Huntsman. They are harmless to humans, though have a painful bite if left with no other options. They are nature's insect repellent and the best spider on earth. :D

I'm glad someone else caught that, I've always known them to be timid spiders, and they're non-venomous. I've heard of a couple who has a pair of resident huntsman living in their bathroom, when they leave on vacay they set out little dishes of water so the spiders don't go thirsty. I thought that was really cute!

My Dad lived in Sydney in the 60’s when he was a boy. He said they had Funnel Webs in their garden all the time. Him and his brothers used to tease them with blades of grass so they’d rear up. They had no idea how poisonous they were. A woman in their town got bit by one and unfortunately passed away.
