Күн бұрын

Today I take my Nikon 85mm lens out to a local lake to do some nightscape photography under the stars. I was keen to try shooting some selfies using flash. As always I had to use myself as the subject and it certainly wasn't easy on a hot Australian night filled with man eating insects.
But as I often say . .any time spend out under the stars is well worth the effort. I hope you enjoy it.

Hi Richard, thanks once again for a great video. I can sypathise with you, I have experianced being eaten alive by midges in Scotland. Generally when there are such things around, it's best to stay clear of water! Your video reminded me of when I made a timelapse of sunset to stars with my telescope in the foreground. When I watched it it was just full of insects. I had to photoshop nearly every frame to remove these ! Looking forward to your next video.

Hey Richard, what about doing also a "quick" circumpolar (star trail) for the background and do a sky replacement with you? Basically, the same photo, same location but one with the star trail without you, then you and merge the two. At 85mm, you should be able to have a nice looking star trail quickly, maybe 15/20mn worth of exposure.

Thanks for the advise on lighting. Regarding insects, I've had reasonable luck treating clothing with Pyrethrum. Then, treating exposed skin with 12hr Deet, Ultrathon, seems to be a good combo. Great video Richard. I was wondering if the flash needs to be fired at the very end of the 5 seconds. I don't have the ability the set off my flash at the end of the exposure but I can fire it off remotely on my own. Should I try to time my flash as close to the end of the exposure as possible or does firing it earlier or during the exposure give the same results?. I'm in Canada and I'll happily trade the -15C and 2 feet of snow for the bugs!! LOL. Thanks for your continued inspiration.

Hi Richard, wow 35 °C at night? that is like in the desert . What were the temperatures in day time? I should do that kind of photos too. I did it just once more than a year ago. It was with my girlfriend and fun. But till now I did not want to take all the necessary extra stuff with me. I will consider it for the next time. But here it is cloudy for weeks , so no chances to go out. Is it a new backpack. I think u had another one at your coast route last year. best greetings

Richard, another amazing video. As always, I love your enthusiasm for the subject. I am going to focus on Milky Way photography this year. I have tried it in the past with limited success. I bought a full-frame Canon Camera and look forward to using it once the weather warms up here in the northern hemisphere. I do have a question for you. I have a challenge dealing with magnetic north versus "true" north. I believe that Google, Stellarium, and other software use true north. However, my compass is magnetic north. Any suggestions on how to deal with this issue. This is particularly useful if a set up a timelapse before it gets dark. Again, than you for sharing your videos.

Thanks so much for your support of my channel Nyall, it's really appreciated. Unless you're using a star tracker and using a compass to polar align i don't think it will matter too much about true north vs magnetic north. With a wide angle lens you won't notice much difference. If you're timelapse is generally pointing north then I think you'll be fine. Here's a good article about it. gisgeography.com/magnetic-north-vs-geographic-true-pole/

Hi Richard, and best greetings from Greece. Just a question am i the only one that hears a disturbing sound in the background of your audio? This is noticeable until 4:55 and disappears after for some minutes and it comes again at 10:03.

Ask Lowepro if they want to use your shot for promotional material for their protactic range?

Someone else may have asked this, so if it's a repeat question I apologize. Can you mix and match brands of speedlights and the remote triggers - Yongnuo and Neewer, or Neewer and Godox, etc? Or do you have to use Brand A remote with Brand A speedlight? And thanks again for another great video.

Thanks for watching Derek. I'm pretty sure Neewer and Godox may be the same thing rebranded .. but they will only work if there is either a built in receiver or a receiver attached under the flash. In fact if you have an external receiver then you can use any flash at all .. including name brands such as Canon or Nikon etc. All you need do is set them to fire manually. I guess what I'm saying here is that it's not the flash unit that's important, it's the flash triggers and receivers. Some are built in .. like the one's shown in this video and others are not. Just as a further example . .I couldn't use a godox transmitter with a youngnuo receiver. Generally you need the same brand at both ends.
