An unexpected, but important interview here talking to Glenn, the owner of The Comics Palace in Massachusetts. Glenn came under unprecedented fire from digital Lynch mobs this week when he released a video saying how hard it was to sell current Marvel and DC titles. He had the temerity to disagree with the agreed narrative and say that the direct market and thus all comic stores were in mortal danger if the big companies continue their current direction. In the wake of the avalanche that followed, Mark wanted to show his support for retailers and talk to him about comics from the front lines.

I grew up riding my bicycle to Glenn's store, the Comic Book Palace in Haverhill Massachusetts with my friends to buy comics and trading cards. In high school and college, I spent hours hanging out in Glenn's store on Wednesdays, chatting with other readers about comics. Glenn is the best comic book store owner I've ever encountered. His store was not only a place to buy books, he really created a community that I had a blast being apart of. I would not have grown up being a veracious comic book reader if Glenn and his store didn't exist. We need people like Glenn. It saddens me to see him mischaracterized by people who don't know him online.

Glenn hit the nail on the head. They don't like to hear the truth. Their stuff sucks and it has for years. They rather print propaganda than tell a good story. To craft escapist stories. The truth does hurt, it's not easy. But sometimes you have to take your medicine. These hacktivists have ruined an industry. Ruined characters that have been around for over eighty plus years. Good on you Mark for reaching out to Glenn and having this dialog.

I talked with Jim Shooter at Toronto FanExpo earlier this year and he told me a story about Stan Lee, in 1987, being stressed out to write a book because he wasn't writing as much and he felt like he might not know the characters well enough. That's the standard that should be expected from anyone below him in the Marvel multiverse. If you don't know the character, you don't get to f up his notoriety.

Many thanks to Mark, Glenn, Yaboi Zack, and all of the others who rallied behind this perfectly reasonable statement of what has been blindingly obvious for the last 6+ years to everyone who genuinely loves comics. Multiple people have been screaming this from the rooftops forever, but maybe it's finally gaining some traction. They tried, they failed, they came close to wrecking an entire industry (or maybe even more than one industry), we can only hope that something can be recovered from the ashes they left behind.

Man, y'all are both a couple of real ones. Never change, guys, keep doing what you're doing. Y'all are the genuine folks we really need around here. Much love from Houston, TX. ❤ Edit: I actually kind of understood why these pros take it so bad, and Glenn actually said it himself in the original video. These pros are writing *THEMSELVES* into the books. So when someone says the books are selling like shit, it's basically a personal attack towards the creators, who wrote the books as self-inserts in the first place! It's like, "You're attacking the way I write Steve Rogers/Peter Parker/Miles Morales/etc. like my own self, you're attacking me." But with any other creator, you write Steve Rogers like Steve Rogers, and not as yourself, if someone doesn't like you writing Steve Rogers as Steve Rogers, then it's not personal, because he doesn't represent YOU, it's just an opinion on how you write the character.
@midlevelgeoff

One of the biggest issues I saw with the blowback is that people going after him don’t understand the difference between a self insert character and infusing your art with parts of yourself.

VERY insightful comment. One of the most frustrating things about this whole flap is people purposefully misconstruing his argument to justify their point of view. It was obvious what Glenn was talking about, but because it was against all this woke stuff being shoehorned in to modern comics, it's got to be shut down. Industry is broken. Great of Mark to have Glenn on. And again, great, great comment. Hit it right on the head.

@@theendishere4709yes. It’s the difference between a Frank Miller doing TDKR, putting his feelings about a 1980’s New York and crime and…Mags Visagio wanting to turn Connor Kent into Mags Visagio. Glenn hit a nerve, a couple of the loud ones or the ones who have to make sure everyone knows they are virtuous (Donny Cates) insult him about something that has absolutely nothing to do with what Glenn said and it didn’t work out for them. I think if this was a few years ago, they would have been joined and cheered on by other creators. But people are sick of the nonsense and the position they put the industry in the last decade.

Thank you, Glen, for speaking up, and thank you, Mark, for standing up for him. I used to own a store in the 90s, and that was a stressful time for comic store owners, this past 14 or so years have been progressively bad for comics. I stopped collecting in 2007, because I saw the sickness creeping in then. I agree in some form the big 2 need to keep going to keep American comics alive as an industry, at the very least they need to sell or lease the IPs to competent writers and artists to keep the characters that people love alive and attractive to collect again. Whether that is you Mark, Ethan Van Sciver, Graham Nolan, Chuck Dixon, Eric July, anyway I think you know what I'm saying, the writers and artists that were cancelled by the big 2 for not following the narrative, and the lovers of comics, that are trying to save the books by starting companies of their own, and creating their own comic universes.

Glenn is 100% right. This is coming from a place of love. The Big 2 need to hold their prices on their products. $5-6 books are also killing the sales. I’m less willing to take chances on these books;especially, having been burned so many times for early cancelled series or books that devolved into some weird fan fiction. There are some creators I will follow across the scene because I know they are capable, creative, and don’t alter the core fabric of the non-creator owned books.

Great vid. What is also not talked about enough is just how much the younger generation has embraced Anime and Manga over Western Comics. Manga is full of interesting concepts with great characters and stories that Marvel and DC just have not been able to compete with, and as a result there is a generation of readers that are just not interested in Western Comics in the way their parents and grandparents where. It's a complete inditement of the big two of the comics industry - they own all the most popular characters, are owned by big media conglomerates with piles of money, and STILL they cannot produce good content for 22 pages. Great episode - love your work Mark! Jupiter's Rising is my fav of all time and I love the Magic Order as well!!

Thank you, Mark, for bringing Glenn to your channel for this discussion. We live in a world with very insecure people who are overly protective of what little they can do to affect an industry and society positively. Insecure individuals are focused on making sure that if they feel threatened in any way or if their secret that they are not good at what they do or that they're a terrible person is discovered, then they rise up and shamefully attack those who want us all to be better, honest, and more collaborative people. I hope those who were that insecure would reach out for help and work with those who do understand the business of creating comic books -- or have experience or are experts in any walk of life -- as they would find that creators like Mark and other industry greats would be very willing to help, teach, and unite. I wish the generation given the reigns to our beloved characters would spend more time writing good stories and less time on social media, defending their narrative, and belittling others. We're all in this together, and Mark has proven that by having Glenn on his channel. Thank you for the conversation!

There is a serious disease infecting North American superhero comics. Thanks to this guy for being honest about the diagnosis and thanks to Mr. Millar for giving this man another chance to explain the diagnosis.

Thanks for doing this Mark! Glenn, the customers have your back mate. I get over to the States once a year and I'll be sure to pop to yours to say hello and spend a few pounds. All the best to you and yours.

Hugely enjoyable and critical discussion, Marvel and DC have an existential threat of their own making - writing style and formats, pricing, relationship to their cinematic counterparts - and for the comic shops that rely on a strong big two, the alternative to survive is to promote manga/indie to a different footfall of customer who have little/no interest in mainstream superhero comics

Thank you Glenn and thank you Mark for showcasing this true fan of the medium. I haven’t been able to pick up a comic in the last 8 years without completely sighing and being disgusted with the state of the comics.

It's sad that the latest drama surrounding current events are vastly more interesting that what's generally going on in current big 2 comics nowadays.

Heh Mark, fellow Coatbridge man here. Living down south now. I went to Forbidden Planet last week, picked up a couple of Batman Graphic Novels. A handful of Teenagers came in, went straight to Manga. Seen this happen multiple times in other comic book shops too. Plus at Comic Cons in the UK, the vast majority of teens are all Manga/Anime cosplaying. The only DC/Marvel cosplay is a few adults and little weans. Even Waterstones has a larger Manga section than DC/Marvel sections....crazy.

I haven't followed comic books for too long to be aware of the current problems in the industry, but it is never a good sign when someone is ostracized for voicing their opinion. Thank you for bringing attention to this and for standing up for Glenn.

Thanks for speaking out. Both of you. I once loved comics -- and I still love the art form. Unfortunately, good story and art are rare anymore.

Mark and Glenn, thank you both for speaking out for the sake of the medium we all enjoy... comics! It's a great time for independents. Sadly, most of us indie comic creators are massive fans of mainstream characters and would love to rekindle the fan base. So watching them get mistreated and disrespected by untested or unprofessional artists and writers who have placed agenda over story and entertainment is tragic. There's still so much potential in them -- and in sales! -- if these companies would just course correct and allow "outsiders" in. Maybe this'll be the beginning of the end of their demise? As Glenn says: the love of comics is still there AND WE HAVE MONEY. We just don't want to give it to companies that insult our loved medium, our intelligence, and the characters we care about.
