I was in the audience for quite a few episodes of The IT Crowd. It was filmed at Pinewood Studios which has sadly just announced they are closing down their TV facilities but just to be clear it was filmed in front of a live studio audience. All studio sitcoms have canned laughter in them. The simple truth is that an audience can still be laughing into another actors line so they shorten the laugh so this isn't the case. Wherever possible they take the audience laugh from the record night

This programme usually has a credits and post credits gag/scene. Be patient and see it through next time. On this occasion you seem to have missed two of the best gags in the episode. I'll bet you're the sort that leaves the cinema as soon as the credits start to roll, rather than sticking around to get the possible cherry on the top at the end. More fool you.
