@silver fox He was both. He served in the British army and made his career in England. The only reason he did not hold a British passport was because he refused to say the Oath of allegiance, which was ironic because he was very good friends with Prince Charles

My mother was Spikes house keeper for a while, he used to leave notes around the house telling her which room he was in. As he moved around the house he would leave another note updating his progress. Well mum followed the note trail and by the time she'd got to the last one he'd gone out. So the next morning she opened the front door and stepped inside, at the top of her voice she yelled, Spike where are you, he yelled back look at the note. Being a welsh lass she loved it when Harry Secombe called round, they had a good natter. Spike butted in and wanted to know what the hell they were talking about. They had been speaking in welsh and he hated that.

Spike's on-the-fly jokes weren't doing as well as he hoped, and the "what the hell are you talking about?" joke from Barrymore made him feel like he was totally bombing. That's why he walked out early and went home to bottle gooseberries. It was a common flaw throughout his career whenever he felt his comedy glad wasn't working. He would just leave the stage and refuse to return to the "bad" audience. He was very sensitive.

Milligan is often very deep and obscure whilst still being funny and outrageous. I’m not going to jump on the anti-Barrymore wagon as they are not necessarily bad or anything, but just a product of the broad-lowest-common-denominator tripe that the BBC were encouraging and churning out at the time (and unfortunately still are).

I thought Barrymore did rather well on that interview, considering the ass of an interviewer, but in terms of ad-libbing, Spike here is amazing - as evidenced by the cheers at the end. MB may be a fearless performer, but he's not a natural comedian; Spike *was* a living script ;-)

What a great man Spike was and even in his old age his humour was unique. His father was Irish and Spike was a regular guest on Irish T.V. shows where he informed a delighted audience and viewers by telling us jokes about how silly the Irish were...he described Ireland as an open air lunatic asylum run by the inmates....this brought the house down...but you wouldn't get away with this today on account on the cursed P.C. nutters. I was sad to hear Spike say not before he died that he had received virtually no offers of work for the past fifteen years or so....thanks to the same political correctness crusaders.....I wonder how many promising young comedians fell by the wayside because of this nonsense.
