Dear Students / All Viewer IMPORTANT - Please note the following correction in the Audiovisual. In the Audiovisual Millikan's oil experiment at 2.16 minutes t has been visualized as exposure of X rays would ionize the oil droplet. SUGGESTED CORRECTION :- But in reality on exposure of X Rays, the air inside the chamber gets ionized & there by liberates electrons. These emitted electrons get attached to the oil drop and thus makes it negatively charged. Please note the suggested correction.

Millikan determined the charge by measuring the terminal velocity of falling oil droplets without an electric field. This enabled him to calculate the mass of the droplets using Stokes' law. Millikan then adjusted the voltage between the plates so that the charged oil droplets remained stationary, balancing gravitational and electrical forces. Millikan could calculate the charge on an oil droplet using the formula: q = mg/E, where q is the charge, m is the mass, g is gravity, and E is the electric field. Millikan repeated the process for various oil droplets and discovered that the calculated charges were always integer multiples of a fundamental value, which he determined to be approximately 1.602 × 10^-19 C. Millikan discovered that the charges on oil droplets were quantized, allowing for only discrete integer values of the electron's fundamental charge. This provided direct experimental evidence for the electron's existence and fundamental charge. In 1923, Millikan received the Nobel Prize in Physics for his precise measurement of the electron charge.

Millikan achieved the fundamental charge of an electron by balancing electric and gravitational forces on droplets, a crucial step in determining their charge-to-mass ratio without directly measuring their mass. Kiran at 4.12min of video it has been explained that Electrical force acting on oil drop (qxe) = m X g ( weight of oil drop, from which charge & e/m ratio was calculated. Please once again go through the video scrupulously.
