Heart centered beams are generally the strongest? However, they will almost always develop cracks upon seasoning. Cutting without the pith will allow less stress while seasoning and have minimal cracking. However, you may end up with a lesser grade beam or post due to grain variation and or knot location? Cutting a post or long beam from a curved log most likely will create a curved piece of lumber upon it drying. It's known as reaction wood. Get it installed and restrained as quickly as possible in order to minimize the warp and or twist. Really good stuff your doing. Thank you sir.

I wish I could get that post out of the curved log installed right away, but unfortunately it was the first log toward this barn project. I will try to store it properly and see what happens. I do think I will make a couple extra posts of this size to have extras in case there are a few unusable timbers in the 6x10 category. I appreciate your insight - keep pointing me in the right direction. 😀

@ourdreaminthewoods Keep going sir, you will succeed. Yes, stack that baby on the bottom. First cut, last one out. The hot weather is over for the year so things won't dry too quickly. Absolutely cut extra of everything, choose the best and build it right. Beautiful Dreams, actually executed = Beautiful peaceful life! You are an American Pioneer. Great work sir. 👏

To rotate big logs with the machine, what works for me is one strap wrapped around the middle of the log twice. No strap attachment except to the machine. The friction of the strap against the log and itself will hold. Of course the strap should be wrapped in the direction such that when pulled up, the log rotates against the log stops.

Hi, Rick, I definitely need a better system. On those big logs I’m worried about how much force I put on the log stops especially with machinery. I’ve seen other people rip the square stock that holds stops. Thanks for sharing your experience and for watching! 😊
@approots Жыл бұрын
@@ourdreaminthewoods Yeah you can lift up and away from the stops somewhat. The strap will keep it from falling off.

It's nice you have that extra track to mill long lengths. That's a good idea. Some thought and planning went into this mill. Good for you guys.

We hope you enjoy this video of Greg milling the post and our visit to Kuz We Kan Farms! Be sure to watch closely when Greg turns the log with the skidsteer...he hits the sawmill cover with the skidsteer and it totally seems to sway!! Did you catch it?!

Greg, I agree with you that is a 'sweet lookin timber'. It must make you feel good to put a log on the mill that has a curve in it and finish with a great looking cant. All of your looking and calculating paid off producing a very nice post for your barn and you got rid of the pith. Plus you cut some nice lumber. Blessings to you, Greg.

Thank you, Bill! Pretty impressed with the sawmill. This is my hardest piece to make, so now I have the confidence to mill the rest. Pretty enjoyable to take a log and make something out of it, especially when I have a challenge like this curve. Thanks so much for always watching! 😊

Howdy y’all- great video! I was holding my breath watching you turn the log lol. I’ve had to turn some big ones by myself and it can get hairy. All of the beams we use are box heart with the pith in the center. I anxious to see how it goes. I’ve heard some timber framers don’t want the pith in the timber, so I’m learning some different stuff here. Hope y’all have a great weekend. God bless

The second big log worked better than this one. Might even take the log off to turn. From what I can tell, you either want center pith or no pith in the timber. Off center or side pith makes it do funky things when drying. Time will tell. Thanks for watching! 😊@@TheBeardedCarpenter

I like how organized and calculated you run your program there in the woods. Would not have caught it 9:00 without the heads up Beth. We cowboys call it a "Dally" by wrapping around the fork you can take up slack but it keeps straps and ropes from slipping. Might have had to have someone there to hold the log to put it down for it to work. Working alone we are all just one slip away.
@ourdreaminthewoods Жыл бұрын
Thank you, Tim! Definitely banged the sawmill cover - I didn't even realize it at the time. Definitely need a better system - second big log roll went better than this one. Wrapping the straps around the forks is a good way to take up the extra length! 😁

I think for safety, it would be best to remove your long log from the mill and set it on some planks, flip it then place it back onto the mill...
@ourdreaminthewoods Жыл бұрын
I agree that removing and flipping on the ground would be safer and maybe faster. Just need to work out a good system. Thank you for the great advice! 😊

Thank you! Yes, definitely have seen some bowed logs lately. Our latest video shared a pretty great log that’s pretty straight. Much easier! Thanks for watching! 😊
