We continue to mill logs for the construction of our solar kiln. We take this opportunity to clear trees that need to come down to make room for our solar panels. Milling cedar logs can be tricky, we share what we have learned in order to get the best yield out of these logs.

You two work together so wonderfully and that makes it fun to watch your channel. John, you were so good to stop what you were doing and spend a few moments with Autumn. These are the times of life that will form your kids into loving adults. Blessing to all of you.

Hay my friend John this idea is really good. You can cut the bottom out of the first bucket & add a 2nd bucket under the 1st. 5hen you can save almost 81/2 gallons.

John just think someday when Autumn grows up and becomes a mother one day she will be setting with her kid/kids and she will tell them the day that her daddy took time to take his boots and socks off and jumped in the sawdust with her. What a AWESOME memory you created in her little mind. How many little girls wish their daddys would take time to do something so silly but yet so wonderful with them. It's the small silly things we do with our kids that they will remember the most. It's great to be a daddy not just a father...

The small rocks you have been digging out of the road up the hill might be utilized for a sawmill pad ...just a thought and maybe if the creek below your house might yield some 10-20 gallons of gravel to smooth the rock bed... maybe's

Just for your information, we in the logging industry call those long stripe scars on trees. Cat faces. Hope you are watching those tops in those dead trees so they don't come down on your machine while pushing on them. Good thinking on the sawdust.

You can cut a few cookies out of the bottom of the big cedar tree and make beautiful tables from them. That way you can start milling without such a big uneven bottom piece on it. People love live edge round tables.

Greetings from the BIG SKY. I built a complete set of Mission/Arts & Crafts tables (5) out of redwood and cedar to get my mortise and tenon cutting defined. Now I have 5 tables out of red oak and another 5 in redwood frames with cedar top and shelfs. Cedar cuts well.

You really don’t need a chain, I have a wheel bobcat and you would be surprised what I do with it, that rock bucket would be amazing but I use a set of forks. I used to log all the beetle dead spruce 90 feet off both sides of the road or hyway, I had to take the logs too, had a 72 kenworth with log bunks and would load that thing Full and head for my mill, you’ll get the hang or it, you’ll see you really don’t need a chain, God Bless

I put a hook on my sawdust outlet on my mill. I hang a 5 gallon bucket on it. When the bucket gets full I dump it in my loader bucket. It beats digging it up. Takes about 3 or 4 passes to fill the bucket. Cheers !!

I was looking at the different moisture meters available a few years back when I was building oak furniture. Cutting your own lumber will require knowing the moisture content of a given piece. The moisture meters I saw were not off the charts, then, to me.

Ricky is a Super Hero, you can see him bend and twist a bit though, and sighs with relief when the load has gone 🙂When you decided to put your for ever mill there I did wonder about the wet mud. You guys, and your equipment ROCK. Is it worth adding to the plan to extend your solar still roof to cover the mill, or at least building the frame? Doors straight in to the Solar from the mill?

I like your content but if you’re going to clear the site & drop dead trees on your property, why waste time pushing with the skid steer? Just have confidence to cut trees with the saw & have the grapple to pick up & clear? 👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧 (it’s a good time of year to walk around your land & cut down dead or part fallen trees to make it safe for your girls)
