This was a factory demo. It should not have cost that much money and when you are purchasing millions of dollars in apparatus the cost shouldn’t be near as much.
@poppiarlin56126 жыл бұрын
zz449944 So where does the apparatus stay? Outside? Great for Detroit. Do you realize how much the equipment on these apparatus cost? Do you think it will be safe? If this unit is an advanced EMS unit it also carries drugs which have to be locked and maintained in a temperature controlled environment. Let’s see Detroit is far north. What about an apparatus sitting outside during freezing temperatures or snow and ice? You are incorrect. This is a huge mistake.
@poppiarlin56126 жыл бұрын
Lisa Ault The more apparatus you purchase the more discount you receive. This is far too expensive considering it is a used apparatus and this wasn’t the only equipment purchased.

What a bunch of nonsense you get a crew of people who are trying to provide the city with proper fire protection, with decent equipment, and one mistake with putting a truck that does not fit in a station turns into a sensationalized story? A couple of years ago they were reporting on the beat up stuff they were running, and they fixed the situation and the media makes a story out of the solution?

They bought a demo truck, meaning that it was already fully built and also possibly could have been slightly discounted. Custom ordering trucks can take a pretty significant amount of time. Still probably should have measured, but this isn’t as serious as they’re trying to make it seem - assuming that the firehouse it was originally meant for received an appropriate replacement for it.

My local mid- sized city department had a similar problem - the downtown station located where the tall building are that a tower wouild be useful for could not fit the Tower. The newer station at the city limit could. A brand new big headquarters station was built. Very nice. fits the tower. You don't back in either, you drive around back and drive in the read door. New for us!

Exactly! I began as a cadet in a public safety depot, police/Fire combined. Luckily, our city thought of the fact that trucks would get bigger and bigger as time went on. Most fire depts are still operating out of old buildings that were built for 50-60’s aged trucks, so naturally newer trucks, especially ladder/tower trucks won’t fit. So what! Spend the money the cheap way and raise the roof, extend the bays! Better yet, build stations that will fit growing depts with both vehicle and manpower growing. As depts grow, they will need more office space, more kitchen, bed since, more inside training space. Do like most stations do, plan ahead, not behind. Hell of a lot cheaper to plan and get today’s price, instead of ten or more years down the road.

The story of the fire truck that was too big reminds me of another similar story. I work in the funeral industry. In one funeral home, the owner bought a new stretch limousine at a trade show. It was cash on the table right there and then. In the interest of fairness, we really did need a new vehicle. Alan brought it back that day and discovered it was 9 inches longer than the garage. Because the car was a demonstrator, it was a "final sale"--no return. At least we ended up with a VERY nice limousine at a fabulous price. (BTW, that company has now moved to a new facility with a bigger garage.)

Decades ago (this is a cute story) Detroit decided to see if they could make some money by "cleaning out the closets" so to speak. They found a brand new horse drawn fire truck that had been purchased just before the decision was made to motorize. Now (then) a valuable antique it sold for over a million dollars. Yeah. Clean out your closets.

@poppiarlin56126 жыл бұрын
Jason Brooks First of all it’s an overpriced used platform. On top of that you want to modify the station and add to the cost? How crazy is that? The fire commissioner used to work for this company. It is obviously an issue with conflict of interest in buying equipment that don’t fit and now you want to pay more money to modify the station? This is not A volunteer department..

So they by a demo model that is cheaper than a spec truck, and put the numbers on it prior to measuring? When they find out it doesnt fit, the simply re assign it to a different fire house, who's truck ALSO needed replacing....and somehow this is a million dollar mistake? They draw heavily on this deputy's past, but cant even link the model to his former company or prove that he had kick backs...its not like there are even THAT many choices for fire trucks....this happens frequently in large departments with old stations and small budgets. You save a TON of money and time by buying a model rig.

Dave Fornel, "Captain Dave" has been a scam artist in the fire apparatus industry for ages. Having worked with the man, I can assure you that he only has his personal interest at the top of his list. As a sales person, he could piss off a customer faster than anyone I had met. As a fellow employee, he had delusions of grandeur that he had been gifted with all of the answers. If he was on an expense account he would order a $200.00 breakfast when the hotel had a free breakfast buffet, just because he could. I remember the first meeting he attended. He came in telling us how he could revolutionize the way we operated because he was the smartest man in the room. Meanwhile, everyone else in the room knew he was full of shit and that he had been hired merely to grease the skids for a major purchase he would have no part in. It is fitting that he finish his career in the industry's shit hole.
