How do you keep your island from going pink and then running out of ppl to fight nearby because of it? That's been my main issue.

There's different ways. You can level up the area near pinkies so much that they can't take any cities so they are forced to move away. Another strategy is to go afk for a day to let your VP drop then focus on attacking the lowest VP players on the island first then after that player goes demo then attack the next lowest VP player and so on. Then upgrade everything as high as possible
