Hey Graham! Dentist/dental specialist here- To answer your question: why dont more dental students take military scholarships?: there are very very few made available each year. I attempted to receive one (filled out the paperwork, got the background check, went through the physical) but all the spots were gone by the time my file was put together by the recruiter. The pros are definitely financial (no tuition which can be anywhere between $200k and $400k and even pay during dental school) but the cons include inability to chose where or how you practice or whether or not you can specialize (and some specialties.... not mine lol... pay significantly more than the general dentist) Love your videos!

@StephenRothDDS
@StephenRothDDS 2 жыл бұрын
Yep! I tried army, air force, and navy. I even tried again in my specialty residency as the army had positions posted on job websites for my specialty. Twice, I put together "a packet" (application) only to find out the position didn't actually exist and it was an error. I still think it's a great option for those that are able to do it! It just didn't work out for me (but other outlets did, and all is well that ends well- ended up in my dream job!)
@a55tech
@a55tech 2 жыл бұрын
@@StephenRothDDS the specialty thing sounds like it more than makes up for the difference in tuition/pay early on so congrats on gettin it done! not sure about Switzerland but in the US, a Phd student is a student. Graham calling them minimum wage workers is not appropriate. Their tuition is covered (usually), which is worth a lot. They are taking classes first, then still studying under the tutelage of an advisor. Their output goes to the bank of academic knowledge and is not directly used for profit the way research in a company might.
@samuel.andermatt
@samuel.andermatt 2 жыл бұрын
@@a55tech In Switzerland you first get a Masters degree before doing a PhD. You also take some lectures during the PhD but very few. You assist to a certain extent with teaching and you make academic research. I mean there is public funding for academic research and I don't see why a PhD should not get a regular salary for teaching and academic research like the professor gets a salary for teaching and academic research.
@a55tech
@a55tech 2 жыл бұрын
@@samuel.andermatt In the US there is a position called post-doc for more normal salaries after they graduate. It's kind of like a residency for doctors, a transition period with multiple exit opportunities. That would be more aligned with what you're describing. But while a student in the US, they are students themselves and their tuition is covered or waived by their PhD program. In the end, they are not considered workers because they're still learning the tools of the trade and they need supervision. The total value of the money taken from research funding to have them is usually well above average salary.

Graham I've been contacted by the Navy recruiters for similar programs that she is in, to be in Medical/Engineering. The reason I personally declined is that the salary from the Navy is normally the states average or a little bellow it, which is way to low for me. I’m pre-medicine and have been approached by the navy. The military in general has a lot of catches that aren’t very favorable. Sure, financial wise it sounds great upfront, but on the back end is where they get you. I’m, personally, not going to sign my soul away to get money now just to be trapped in the future. But for some people it works! And more power to them (:

med student here commenting for the algorithm: in the military, you make MUCH MUCH less as a doctor/dentist. You don't pay for school, but if you make half as much (or less in some specialties), you lose money on the backend during the 4+ years you need to be a military doc. For physicians, you might not be able to match in the specialty you want, either. I'm starting emergency medicine residency in July - I can't imagine what I would do if I had to be a family physician instead!
@riftech57
@riftech57 2 жыл бұрын
that made be true in the long run for certain specialties but in the short term, you make more money and have zero debt. As for matching it might be true in the Air force and Navy it is mostly primary care, but not the Army. The US Military education program is better than most residency programs out there. Also certain medical specialties you make more in the military verse the private sector.

@@riftech57 that's just not true, man. You make less in the military than civilian. In higher earning specialties like ortho/derm/ophtho you make WAY less in the military. Every military branch, army included, may make you do 1-2 years of primary care before residency because the demand for it is so high. It is much harder to match into your specialty of choice in the military.

I actually LOVE the smell of the dentist and the hospital. Industrial cleaners, formaldehyde, rubbing alcohol is the perfect slurry of smells for me. It's addictive as hell to me. I also love the smell of paint thinners, motor oil, petrol, bleach, chemicals, white outs, sharpies, and paint haha. It's like smelling carcinogens is my jam hahaha.

I wanted to join the military. My step dad had other plans. Let's just say that if I would've joined, I would've been homeless until I was able to head off to bootcamp. My two youngest brothers had a similar encounter, but because everyone by that point had moved out, they were able to leave home and have places to crash. My only option was in another state. And yes, I think he would've kicked me out because he had no qualms about doing insane things like that. I was 18, it was my decision. I didn't have to tell him I guess. Just one day go "whelp, I'm outta here. Off to bootcamp, see ya."

as a newly minted member of the military (army), military discounts aren't as abundant as one might presume. you have to do research on which companies provide discounts and some companies only have those discounts on certain occasions

I have a friend who is in the Navy Reserves (she enlisted and then went reserves a few years ago) and currently works as an ICU nurse and I am telling ya, she can afford so much. She is now a travel nurse (no benefits, but she has health insurance through the Navy) and makes like...so much more now. She maxed out all her retirement funds via 403B/401K and some other investments that she has no idea what to do with the rest of her money!

Lol military discount is hardly anything any where if they even have it. And the insurance can be good depending on your health needs

I’m a psychotherapist and I did that route. But my profession pays sh t lol. My only advice is to start planning the way she will have a family or continue a legacy. The steaks, trips and drinks will eventually get boring and so much money accumulated will be worthless

Nontaxable BAH is real, and it's a flat rate so if you rent a super cheap apartment you can straight up pocket $1-1.5k per month lol. Unfortunately from what I've seen, most people choose the most expensive apartment possible and use it all up
