Chromium provides a passive Cr2O3 oxide film which prevents the bulk metal matrix corroding. Technically 10% is required although most manufactures use at least 12% to prevent localised corrosion near welds etc

Chrome is simply short for chromium, but sometimes short for chromium plated steel. Chrome and chromium ARE the same. Alum and aluminum are not the same; alum is a general word for a class of hydrated double aluminum salt. Sod is not sodium, a German is not germanium, Neptune is not neptunium. But chrome is chromium.
