Absolutely incredible that Texas has their own electrical grid without let's say an 'emergency line' to other states. I live in Germany and never experienced a single blackout. Everything regarding electricity is underground and even if something similar would happen we could still get electricity from other countries. However, this happened and there are people dying. I hope they somehow manage to get through this. Especially the most vulnerable in our society. Speaking of homeless people. I can't even think of what they experience without shelter.

I live in San Antonio. This is my 4th day with no/very intermittent power and no water. I grew up in Nebraska so I'm very used to cold weather. It's hard but you just have to know how to survive. A lot of people don't have basic survival skills. It's not their fault, they just don't know. I've been going to a local wooded area and in the parking lot at my apartments and tearing branches off trees to burn in the fireplace. Luckily I have a small outdoor grill that I've been able to use with the kindling wood for food as well (after I ran out of charcoal.) All of the stores and gas stations are closed, so it's hard to get more supplies. At night I let the embers in the fireplace burn down and that acts as a small "space heater." People shouldn't fall asleep with a live fire going. I put blankets over all of the doors and windows, and bundle up very good at night...making sure to always keep my head and feet covered. I don't drink the tap water here anyways, so I always keep a large supply of drinking water. I also keep matches, lighters, batteries etc on hand. Also, food just has to be set outside in a trash bag or cooler to keep from spoiling. I sit in the car a few minutes a day to charge my phone and keep the car battery from dying. A lot of people are sitting in their running cars for hours on end, which is really dangerous. I'm just lucky to have the resources to survive, especially with a 3 year old to take care of.

I had no power, water or gas for 3 days. I didn't flush my toilet for days. It got pretty messy and I live by myself. No showering either. It got so cold in my house I could see my own breath. Thank God I had prepared earlier for this by buying enough fire log for a week. Other people weren't so lucky. They sat in their cars. Actually saw news on my phone how a few people died from car exhaust. All my fire wood was gone in 3 days burning it all day and night. Other people had to burn their possessions like furniture, charcoal, even kids toys. Now we have to deal with these electric companies screwing us over man. It's a great start to the year. Ohh did I mention how everyone's pipes busted. Our houses weren't exactly build for this weather either.

They rather not prep, depend on the government, then end up in a terrible situation, like this. My mother always told me to save money for a rainy day, never spend money unless necessary, and always prep(have seeds, non perishable foods, generator, flash lights, candles, etc), and the main thing she told me:NEVER depend on the government, they will leave you high and dry and on your own. So get a good education, don't have too many kids, get 2 decent jobs and teach others the skills you know, like sewing, cooking, doing hair, etc for free and be good to everyone and lend a helping hand when you can.

Poorly built Texas homes and apartment buildings. No insulation or very little insulation. No basements so they run the water pipes in the open 1 foot from the house, and then through the exterior uninsulated walls and through the ceilings. Builders have even been putting the water heaters in the attics!!!! How foolish can they get? And the building codes in Texas allow this? Incredibly foolish. They build as cheaply and poorly as they can possibly get away with and when the cold weather hits all those pipes freeze. Burst water pipes, water damage everywhere, and Ceilings cave in. No basements so they can't store supplies in a temperature-controlled space.

Our power was out for 97:hours , but we found a motel 46 miles away. We left at 49 hours as my back seizes up in the cold and has become so painful, and now back in the wheelchair I go. Since we are on a well, no power means no water either. Power came on last night so we got to come home today. My heart goes out to those who are still without power. Stay safe and warm!
