Every four years, millions of sockeye salmon journey thousands of miles from the ocean back to their native spawning grounds in Canada's Fraser River. There, after eggs are laid, the parents die. Then the cycle begins anew as the next generation of salmon makes its way down the river and into the ocean.

I caught 15 sockeye salmon in the Kenai River in Alaska. One was too small to keep, so I had to release him a way very different from how you release a bass or a bluegill or something like that. I loved pushing him back and forth in the water and then watching him swim away after that last push. I love sockeye salmon. I always have.

"Why not Humans? Really? Maybe because bears in mass haven't damned their path are polluted their waters, or penned them in "farms", or hooked them in the face with rusty barbed hooks. Maybe while the crowds of humans are viewing these magnificent fish with awe and respect that anthropocentric dude could put his pole down and consider how incredibly difficult it is for these fish to make it to their spawning grounds. 'Just something to consider. Fish are animals too!

That same thing is affecting the east coast Atlantic salmon populations. It’s to a point that IF you can fish them in my area, they need to be released, unless you are indigenous. I just wish I could have my son feel the absolutely thrill of a salmon taking a fly, the fight they put up, and seeing them launch themselves from the water. I’m teaching my boy to fly fish, but it’s likely going to be for trout, i won’t participate in stressing the remaining population out
