Real-life example of a military exercise not ending well for the superior force: My father is ex-mil, and one tale he told me (which I confirmed, but the story as told here is being sanitized in case any of it might be classified) about one time his unit, a bunch of Navy electronics technicians, radiomen, etc., was pitted against a group of Marines from a combat unit in a basic combat exercise that was meant to give the techs a little taste of actual warfighting. The tech force were to defend an area against the Marines as the attacking force. Each side had a two-hour prep window, which the defending team used to booby-trap the hell out of everything, including objectives and supply stashes, via improvised non-lethal "weaponry" (flashbangs, etc.) that would be counted as "lethal" for the purposes of the exercise. The exercise did _not_ have the desired/expected effect. Once the actual "fighting" started, the techs wiped out the entire attacking force in less than an hour, winning by attrition as their perfectly-placed traps _utterly destroyed_ the attacking force. Team tech only lost like two people to the Marines' entire force of fifty. Pop said with a chuckle that he imagines the Marines likely got wrecked a second time by their C.O. for losing so badly to a bunch of nerds.

My signals mates and I took part in an orienteering event vs chaps from assorted units, mainly from the "roughy toughy" parts of the British army, including a couple from the paras and some scary SAS types. It was on the N York moors, which we knew quite well from other training. We adopted the "We aren't going to win, but let's stay out of the really shitty bits" approach - a lot of the straight line routes seemed to be deliberately across some horrible ground, when a bit of thoughtful map work could still get you there. We didn't win, we came third out of eighteen. The SAS won, naturally, but looked like swamp things, as did most other teams. They must have power slogged through all the sludgy bits we avoided. We were a bit muddy, but could have done the route again without too much whining. When the Umpire reported that we had stopped briefly for tea and sandwiches, the looks from the other teams were delightful.

The concept of peace while being inferior didn't exist in the Imperium's culture, other races and groups maintained independence at the mercy of the Imperium. In that moment, Humanity had just absorbed half of the held territory in the Galaxy, whether it wanted it or not. Scores of representatives from across the former Imperium stood before him now, awaiting new laws to be handed down, to replace those failed ones that had lead to this situation, at least, in the eyes of the former Imperium citizens. Thankfully, the Chief Ambassador and his team had managed to stall this ceremony long enough to have laws ready, adapted from Earth's Foundational Principals to make sense to the former citizens of the Imperium, who lacked cultural concepts such as "rights", among others. Thankfully, the Chief Ambassador was a long time enthusiast of the Empire Management subgenre of Real Time Strategy 4X games. This was no different, other than the lives of some six hundred trillion people now relying on him, for real.

I quite enjoy your storytime :) With that said, it looks like you do it in one take, without going over each story beforehand. It shows in places like 4:16, where it sounds like you expect the sentence to end with “fight,” and then are surprised and tack “war” on to the end. I notice spots like that often, or where you emphasize a strange part of a sentence, or skip a word, and it makes it seem like you’re reading it out loud for the first time. Doing a practice take might help. I realize you’ve been doing this for quite a while, and have a process worked out, but I wanted to point it out to you. I enjoy listening to you reading these stories and I hope to listen to many more.
