Milton Keynes - Then and Now

A documentary, written, filmed and edited by me and my good friend Mark, about the new city of Milton Keynes.
This documentary was entered into the OxDox:MK competition, 2007. Although we didn't win, we got some good feedback, which hopefully will help us to improve our skills, and make our next film even better!
Mark came up with original idea for the documentary, which was simply to show how fantastic Milton Keynes really is, through a combination of visual images, interviews, archive photographs and narration. I think we succeeded, and hope you guys do too.

This is a great wee video, I was down there about 6 weeks ago visiting my friend. Yes its famous for the Cows & roundabouts, but there's more to it than that, Not only do the towns of Bletchley, Wolverton & Stoney Stratford still maintain their identity & character, theres a lot of thought put into the planning of the city & the green spaces, lakes & canals define the place for me. This place is moving in the right direction. I love Milton Keynes.

Plenty of people knock Milton Keynes, most of them are too young to appreciate it or don't live there. Spending half my life driving to different parts of the country makes me appreciate the grid system. Being able to go for a 5 mile walk from my house and only having to cross one road (the one I live on) to do so, makes me appreciate how unlike a city it is. It also has all the modern conveniences. compare it to the two closest big towns Bedford and Northampton and it is far, far better.

Yes that oak tree was perfectly happy standing between Saxon Court and The Point, but the developers and the later city planners thought that they knew better!

I lived outside of MK from 1986-1989. As a young American, I thought it a great place whenever I was homesick for a bit of America. Fro a bit of a laugh, my ex-husband had an American sportscar parked there and forgot where he parked. Thanks to the security staff back in 1987, he found his American Yank Tank.

@1982aaron Of course it has the best bicycle network of any place in the country (for you non-drivers). It also has the best road layout of any place of a similar size in the country. Try driving through any other place during the daytime and see the difference. I doubt there is much commuting to Birmingham. London is a different matter but that is true of any place within 60 miles of London. Milton Keynes is also a centre of innovation and business why so many companies are based there.

Guys, can somebody ask my question? I'm living in London, but man its so expensive... i am planning to move to a smaller city but i don't know... My questions would be: How much does (average) cost an apartman? With no other people. How easy can i find a job? MK has many opportunities like London? and how does it feel to live in MK? Is it a nice place?

Unless you are specifically looking for clean quiet living then going straight to Milton Keynes from London may be a bit of a shock, could just ease down and go somewhere like Bristol or Southampton, both fairly similar to MK price wise but more vibrant and big citylike (although the latter doesn't have the transport infrastructure to support the high population density and can be bleak in places). Brighton is a bit more expensive but very nice and still cheaper than London.

It’s actually a decent place if you pick a nice area. Any of the very old or very new places should be fine. I’d avoid places like the lakes estates, downs barn, penny land etc. as those areas are slightly rougher. There are so many smaller communities to choose from so just do your research and you’ll be fine.

actually..the law has changed. just need a uni now. we have one, and am building another one. (yes im in milton keynes). ... and we have large mosks and large churches. so the government said we'll almost certainly be a city in 2009 =)

It's not bad. I live about 20 mins way and the last time I went there was about a year ago..If you travel off from the normal shopping center route you will find some rather unique architecture!

last time i went to milton keynes...i would go to this pub that served bombadier...and there was a dog you could buy pints for.... i forget his name...BRUCE...that is his name..and they have this cross dresser that likes to tease you at night..i was hoping it was a girl..but i think it was a guy..who was following me..jumping out the car..smacking his or her own ass..then as i came forward would jump into the car and drive forward again... i hope it was a girl...

I live here. From a street/teenage perspective, this place is a shit hole and rough as fuck. I would seriously leave at the first opportunity. The Police don't do fuck all and the council are fucking terrible. Dont knock this comment, im just saying how it is from my perspective and a kid growing up in MK.

Milton Keynes is not a city and will never be, the layout is ridiculous and if you dont drive you basically will struggle to get around due to the very poor and over priced bus service that is run there. The place was only ever built as on overspill city for London and Birmingham, and that unfortunately will all it will ever be.

How these new developers have trampeled the vision of milton keynes. Fucked up the excellent road system, Building tower blocks, over vrowding the center. Its horrible what they've done.
