Milton’s Paradise Regained is a sequel of sorts to his earlier and more famous epic poem Paradise Lost.
It shares similar theological themes related to obedience. Whereas Adam lost paradise because of his disobedience, Jesus regains it through his obedience.
Milton’s account of Christ’s is not directed at his substitutionary atonement, and his ‘passive’ obedience as an atonement for sin, but rather with his ‘active’ obedience in resisting temptation and living a perfect human life.
The scene used to demonstrate this perfect human obedience is the temptation of Christ recounted in the Gospel of Luke.
