We take a look at a faulty Milwaukee M18 4ah red lithium battery and see how to repair it. We'll start by testing the voltage of the battery, which is suboptimal at only 14.5v. We'll then remove the casing and test individual cells, finding two of them are faulty. Using donor cells from a Dewalt Flexvolt battery( both the Milwaukee 4ah and the 6ah flexvolt use similar 18650 cells 18650 cells with 2000mah lithium ion cells), we replace the faulty cells and test the voltage and charging of the Milwaukee battery. The other sizes of flexvolt 9ah and 12ah will not be compatible as they contain 21700 lithium ion cells which physically larger and have higher outputs. The cell replacement of the 2 donor 18650 from the flexvolt dewalt 6ah was effective however the battery also required a pcb board replacement which can be ordered on ebay. The fix was truly effective with the new pcb and a full bank of viable 18650 cells the battery took a full charge and is in working order. The cells used are inr18650 samsung cells. This fix will work on 5ah 4ah batteries although 5ah batteries have 2500mah cells instead of 2000mah. Battery repair is a risky undertaking and should not be done without careful consideration.
