RUBY GILLMAN, TEENAGE KRAKEN: THE LITTLE MERMAID, BUT BETTER DONE
SPOILERS!
Since it was announced I knew that I was going to end up loving this movie and indeed I did, beyond the beautiful character designs that remind me a bit of Luca and Small Foot, this movie made a lot of noise because of Chelsea's enormous resemblance with Ariel, at times it is as if you were watching a parody of The Little Mermaid where Ariel is the villain and Ursula is the good one but it really has little or nothing to do with it since this movie is a very different story from the Disney classic, rather it is a reinterpretation of the legend of the mythical Kraken and the mermaids which may or may not be real.
In this story we see the kraken as protectors of the ocean and the mermaids as ruthless beasts, Ruby is a descendant of a dynasty of royal krakens but her mother has kept her hidden, out of the ocean and without knowing anything about the past until she meets Chelsea, a mermaid with whom she befriends, but she hides a dark secret.
The plot is Ok, although I would have liked to see more lore of the Krakens and how they protected the oceans beyond just an explanation, maybe a flashback of some battle or some other oceanic creature like the Leviathan (mentioned in the movie) and so on. I feel that in terms of universe construction the film is a bit weak.
The story itself is about self-acceptance and family trauma, something I thought only Pixar did (actually it looks a bit like Turning Red) but that's okay, but yes, this movie has its good jokes and if there's something about it What Disney will NEVER be able to surpass Dreamworks is in its humor and this movie handles it quite well and in a way that is pleasant for all audiences, the characters, although they are somewhat cliché, have their charm, especially Ruby and Chelsea, who are a kind of ship medium rare, but in the end nothing happens, in fact oh surprise! It turns out that Chelsea is the villain and she is so cool! She is literally my favorite character, she befriends Ruby only to get a magic trident and turn into a giant monster with BlackPink soundtrack included.
Obviously this movie is not perfect, it is not perfect at all, but if you like fantastic stories, unnecessary ships and kawaii designs (like me) then #TeenageKrakenMovie you will love it, I think that Dreamworks is slowly rising from its losing streak with movies like Puss In Boots: The Last Wish and now Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, I think that's a good start.
My rating for this movie is: 9/10
