MIMCRY was written and recorded by the Three Wise Monkeys for their F̴AL̶SE͜ F͡L̡A̵G album.
"Mimicry" is a similarity of one species to another, and can be similar in appearance, behaviour or sound...
The Guitar::
Let's get it out of the way first! No this is not the GG Signature Charvel, but yes it is based on that guitar (Mimicry:similar in appearance, behaviour or sound).
Kypo is a huge fan of GG and wanted to build an instrument along the same principles. IE, a Roasted Maple Neck and Fingerboard (which Warmoth had just started making), and the Floyd Rose (Non fine Tuner)Tuner tremolo. Also wanted to include a Tremol-no unit so the instrument could has have a fixed bridge, as well as floating.
We've added in some variations. Guthrie mentioned he had one made with a Koa Top, and some of his Suhr guitars had Koa, so we wanted to try that. Lucky we found a nice piece of Koa in the Warmoth 'Unique Choice' Library. The Body is Mahogany.
It has an Earvana graphite Nut to get better string intonation.
It has Tronical Tuners on it, and in-conjuction with the Tremol-no bridge locking system, This guitar can perform a wide range of drop and open tunings.
The neck has 16" radius Stainless steel frets, and the warmoth Pro Truss rod. The neck is really stiff and holds up well with different tunings.
Pickups : Are from Tom Anderson Guitar Works. These things sound amazing!
It has a H2 in the Neck, an SAIR in the Middle and H3+ in the Bridge .
Tom also gave some advice on the Wood Mounting of these pickups. Originally we'd planned to the the FU pick-up Mounting system, but the TA pickups are taller. Tom suggested some foam under the pickups, to minimise microphonics , so thats what the foam is for in the video. The foam gives the right amount of springy-ness , so the pickup height can be adjusted. Thanx Tom!
We did you some of the Noiseless tremolo springs from FU (Floyd Upgrades)
Electronics wise, we used a 5 way Megaswitch from Schaller, 500K volume Pot from CTS and a Switchcraft Electrosocket. (Note the Tone is not in the circuit yet, just for looks.)
Dunlop Strap Locks finished off the guitar.

The Track::
This track had its first origins in the old 3WM Line-up, and came from a two handed Tapping pattern Alex has come up with. It was first Jammed in June 2013, which was recorded on a iphone at the old EarCandy Studios in Brookvale. The session fleshed out the basic structure, drum groove and the verse Guitar melody.
The Bass track was first recorded in January 2014 at Kypo's home studio. Alex laid down the Verse and Chorus tapping parts to a programmed drum track, of some of the patterns Liam created during the writing session.
The drums for the final take of Mimicry, were performed by new member Brendon Waterman and was recorded in studio A of UWS on the September 2014, @ 192kHz, via a Digidesign Protools console. We used a variety of RODE and Shure Mic's on the kitt. 6 lines all up. Kick, snare, 2 toms, & 2 overheads.
Further Bass was Recorded by Alex in Studio A of UWS in October 2014. Mainly the addition of the bridge section.
Guitars were recorded @ Kypos home studio using a Mesa RoadKing Head into a Mesa Cab clone, and direct into the computer. The dry amp tone got some treatment with the Ocean Way studio's UAD Plugin and a little delay. The track was recorded with the 3WM sustainer guitar, which featured throughout the F̴AL̶SE͜ F͡L̡A̵G album.
Track was mixed and mastered in Logic Pro, with UAD plugins.
The video footage was taken by Lotus, Noah and Parker on a Canon 5D Mk3
Clip edited in Final Cut Pro.

This video is awesome! Not often do I see good guitar players that also build. The tune is very impressive as well. Where can one find the specs for the recess, that works for the non-fine tuner Floyd Rose?

Hi James. Thanx for your kind words mate. I got Warnoth to do their standard Floyd rose route. This is the Ol skool Floyd sits above the body route. That gets everything straight. I also got a low profile neck joint, and out of the box the Floyd was sitting a little high, so I used a stew-mac Floyd rose routing template to recess the cavity a little, so I could get the string height lower to the fret board. I just adjusted the template around the actual Floyd rose to set the length of the route. All done by eye. I was a little risky as I could of easily scratched the top, so I just took it easy. Luckily I all came off good and the string action is a great feel. Hope that helps! Cheers mate

what are your thoughts about the guitar acoustic resonanse? i really enjoy playing a very resonant guitar, those when you hit a string feels like a big spring.

Javier Salcedo this guitar is pretty stiff because of the Roasted maple neck. The guitar sounds great when played acoustically, I don't use much gain, because the guitars tone is pretty focused in the mids.

Wondering what the tuning stability is on this Floyd set up is? ... as I'm all but done on my Warmoth spec but I'm conflicted on what bridge to get. This seems the best option especially with the Tremol-no unit for drop D.

Hi, Yeah Ive only tried the tremolo with the floyd rose (non fine tuner). seems to be a good match although i did change the block to a titanium large block, and there was a little bit of mucking around getting it all to work together. Im really happy with the tronicals on this guitar, and how they work with the floyd and tremolo-no. For the kinds of things I need to do with this guitar- (alternate tunings), the warmoth baked maple neck seems to handle all the different tensions, and the tronicals are pretty good at getting things in tune. The only thing I did with the floyd, is I brought some shims and put them in , so the radius matched the compound radius of the neck better. From memory, the floyds are best used with a 12' radius neck. if you order a compund neck, 10-16', the shims make the floyd a little flatter (roughly 18-20") if you google floyd shims your bound to find the same info i did on it, someone has put a guide up there to tell you how many shims you put under each floyd saddle. @@THREE-WISE-MONKEYS This most certainly does help. I was wanting to ask loads of stuff and you've answered them anyway especially the radius thing. It's really drop D that gets used most or will get used most on this guitar so the option for a double locking Floyd and then fit the Dtuna was my plan but seeing your vid reminded me of my N4 with its buzz feiten tuning and how amazing that is so getting the earvana and the basic non lock Floyd feels the right direction plus hassle free. I shall indeed Google the shims. I better order soon too while the UK is still part of Europe, who knows what the custom charges are going to be after leaving. @@redcustard Ahh! get it quick! haha. Yeah I like the earvana nut. I have them on a few guitars, and anything that helps, is worth having. Yeah I have an EVH (Fender) Wolfgang, and the D-Tuna works pretty well if the guitar is set-up. Occasionally it won't drop to the D in-tune. So they are good, but can be a little finicky. I did try the Tronicals tuners with another guitar that had a double locking floyd rose, and I just took the clamps off the nut. Yeah It worked ok. The thing with any alternate tuning, is that if you loosen one string, all the others tighten slightly to compensate, so having the Tremolo-no there, gives you a fixed bridge when its engaged. The only drawback, is that the tremolo is a little stiffer, because of the tremolo-no "piston arm", I tend to like my floyds floppy so they warble. The tremolo-no resticts that.

Nice guitar, when you got the body Warmoth, normally does the non recessed Floyd rout with an angled pocket and also offers a 720 mod for rear rout bodies. I am just wondering what the specs were of the neck pocket prior to you doing the modifications? Was it angled and/or the 720 option?

No they don't normally do it, But this month 08/2018 they took on 5 people who committed to having it done to see if it is in demand. So they are now making them and learning the process. So in the near future it should be an option for us!! :)

I just bought a Floyd Non-Fine Tuner tremolo and emailed Warmoth about it to make sure it would work. Here is their reply. We rout specially for the Non-Fine Tuner Floyd Rose Tremolo (stud mount only and requires a Warmoth pickguard with custom bridge cut) as an off-menu option. D Mac I used a stew Mac floyd rose routing template, but placed it in two positions to do the front and back of the cavity, just measured the size of the cavity I needed against the non fine tuner floyd. Hope this helps;)

So the radius of the neck is 16" but the non-locking floyd's radius is either 10" with the shims or 12" without... How did you rectify that...? Or didn't you?

The Fingerboard Radius is 16 Degrees and the Floyd is a 12 Degree Radius. 4 Degrees is noticeable. Hope you worked that out. Cheers

Carlos Fallas , originally it had a Stew mac Mega switch installed. You just wire the pick ups to the switches terminals and the switch would do the rest, but that thing seezed up and was replaced with a normal 5 way. HSH wiring. Then I got Sydney Luthier Charles Cilia to install a sustainiac Sustainer in there, so it’s had a few mods since this initial build ;)

Carlos Fallas yeah the mega switch, I wouldn’t recommend. On the stew Mac website, under the reviews, a lot of people state there switches have become stuck. I didn’t listen and brought one anyway, and yep, it became stuck. Not sure why, the luthier I went to just laughed when he saw it, I don’t think it was the first stick mega switch he’d seen;)

Yes, its floating, but has a Tremol-no system installed, so it can also be locked down for a fixed trem, that way I can use the Tronical tuners for alternate tunings.

Brad Kypo that's pretty nifty and how did you rout it out ?

Joey Mondry , the warmoth body came with a standard floyd tremolo rout (floyd above body) , but I wanted the tremolo recessed into the body, so I re-routed the body approx 1/8 of an inch , so the tremolo sits into the body and the short floyd lock in screws have a bit of room so the tremolo can float ( pull up as well as down) . Warmoth didn't have a option for the non fine tuner floyd, (the do for a recessed standard floyd) so I had to go it by myself. I just dropped the tremolo in, and made some pencil markings of how much room I wanted to create, and then used a floyd routing template I had from stew-mac to assist with the routing. The template is for a standard floyd, so I had to move it to 2 positions to take into account the string locks are shorter on this model. I've routed a few guitars before, so I had a bit of experience doing this. If it is your first time, I'd suggest practicing in a price of wood, to get a feel for your router, as sometimes they bite and can jump under the template. I just use blue-tak to hold the template to the body. the saw dust will interfere with the blue-taks grip, so you want to get it done in the first pass. Blue -talk also helps setting the height of the template off the body, so the router guide rubs against the template. Hope this helps;) Kypo.
