I’m here for the knitting but I really appreciate all of the book recommendations, too. Thank you for that.

I've done no-spend periods numerous times and always find them to be a positive experiences. And, yes, to the bartering! I LOVE when I can barter! I'm always up for book suggestions! I love to read and always enjoy hearing what others are enjoying reading.

Audiobooks are also so perfect for knitting or spinning.

Concerning what to do with all ur older sweaters, shawls, hats etc. There is a practice of going thru ur older knitted items & seeing what ur emotional commitment/connection is to each item. Some items u will be able to say thank u to them, take a picture of them & say good-bye to them to give or sell to someone else. Other knitted items u will say 'aww u r my friend & i will fix it so we can be together again more.' Then u either modify the item by taking apart the side seams & adding a darker yarn (which is very slimming in effect) & make the garment comfortably wearable again or take the garment apart & reclaim the yarn becuz u have a connection to the yarn more then to the garment. Some folks take some of their older shawls that they want to keep & they get a thin blanket or thick cotton sheet & they attach some of the shawls to the blanket or sheet for a decorative blanket or sheet to display & 'use' those shawls. Some use their older shawls for making a decorative lampshade. I think u get the idea.

Regarding your question about having enough sweaters, shawls, hats etc but still wanting to knit... I belong to a Buy Nothing exchange in my small town in Washington state (but I've heard things like this are all over). It is run on Facebook as a group and you can post if you have something to give away or if you are looking for something. So essentially I am giving things away to people I do not know, but live close by. When my mother-in-law died a few years ago, she left behind a few hundred knitted items and we gave most of them away using Buy Nothing. People were so appreciative to have a beautiful hand knit sweater, shawl, etc. It was a very fulfilling experience for us.

That sounds lovely! We actually have that here too. I used it a few years back when I went through my house and got rid of stuff. I remember it feeling really good to get it out of my house but in the hands of someone who needs it.
