The games the Lions defense struggled was that handful of games from midway through the Thanksgiving game through week 17 in SF. Why those games? It wasn’t just the d-line injuries. It was the fact that Jack Campbell was the only LB left, and he was playing out of position. They got Reeves-Maybin back, and last week the defensive captain Anzalone. That also puts Campbell back at his natural position as well. Magically with the LB corps set back more to normal, the Lions defense went right back to its midseason form as a top red zone and 3rd/4th down defense.
@dcnole12 күн бұрын
What Barnwell hinted at 24:12 is key for the Commanders. Just because you run no huddle doesn't mean you also need to run hurry-up. You can get to the line and then just chill for 15 sec. This still prevents the defense from effectively subbing players/swapping packages. I expect to see this a lot. Washington knows that they need to hold the ball just like they did vs. Tampa. "No Huddle Slow-Down" is the best way to do that for them. This is also why the Commanders are so aggressive on 4th down. It's not about trying to leverage fractional win %. Primarily, it's about keeping the ball. They accrued over 5 min of extra TOP against Tampa AFTER making 4th downs. They robbed Tampa of a whole possession in clock time. That's almost like a takeaway.
@Contrapastan11 күн бұрын
Dan Campbell has discussed this "chilling" at the line without holding the ball, and will insist on being allowed to make substitutions. Will also be interesting to see no huddle where you have to use 100% silent signals

They literally joked that commanders fan had to listen to them trash our defense for 5 straight minutes lol.

@Leo61985812 күн бұрын
@ Not true at all, Most Commanders fans are well receiving of criticism towards the Commanders. It's because we know there's a lot of areas that can and will be fixed. So it's definitely not an all fanbase issue by any means. This behavior is more commonly seen among teams who are often at the top of their conference. But even that's not always the case. I rarely saw Chief's fans getting mad when analysts were criticizing the left tackle being such a weakness.
@lionslucksportscards983512 күн бұрын
If you’re beating teams by two scores late, teams will be in no huddle and your defense will be in a prevent. That’s going to lead to a lot of yards. I saw the Commanders struggle in the red zone last week. That’s where the Lions defense thrives. The Commanders will score maybe 24 points. The Commanders D will hard pressed to stop the Lions from scoring 40 plus. That is why the spread is 9.5. If Jayden Daniels plays a legendary game, the Commanders will have a chance. That is the only way. Also, Goff has been elite under pressure this year. What is this dude talking about?

The only way the Commanders stand a chance is Daniels standing on his head.
@ronniethomas878012 күн бұрын
@lionslucksportscards9835 the arrogance stems from this idea that the Commanders will be blown out, that we'll somehow need divine intervention to have any chance. 28:26 Something interesting to note, Nate Tice dug up NextGenStats and found that the Lions actually have the highest ranked pressure rate in the NFL when rushing 4 since acquiring Za’Darius Smith. It’s funny how Barnwell is claiming the exact opposite just due to his own belief of the injury situation.
@Diddyums12 күн бұрын
The whole "Lions have had so many injuries" argument seems so lazy. It's not just the injuries it's the constant rotation of PS level players that was going on that caused the biggest problems. Now the DL and LB groups are pretty settled with Paschal and Anzalone at 100%. Amik has really settled in out outside CB. Iffy is finally healthy at getting fully back in the groove. Even Kerby and Branch had early and mid-season slumps respectively but currently are playing at an all pro level. I'm not saying the defense is perfect but it's much better than the season average stats will tell you.

Week 4, BUF was missing several starters, but the Ravens also had the 29th ranked defense in the league, and now have about three new starters. The Bills made an addition to their offense since and have played better, but this was the same Ravens team that nearly gave up 30 to the Raiders and the Bills only scored 10. At the end of the day, I just don't see how the Bills stop Henry without completely selling out to do so and they just don't have the backers to deal with TWO TEs. I think the Bills are going to try and play Henry and Lamar more conservatively, instead of crashing heavy on one, and it's just going to be a slow death.

The point is the Bills probably cut their losses not being able to slow Lamar and Henry on the ground. However the Bills offense have the QB and the talent to probably move the ball downfield and get scores as well. Which is why they have to get on the board early and control the clock with long scoring drives within 3 quarters. Because if the Bills are playing behind by the second half, the margins are far smaller trying to overtake the Ravens in points. All while Lamar/Henry eat up clock with options to pass or run to control the clock themselves with the Bills defense on the field. But this could all change too if Allen can have his deep shots to his receivers on the sidelines too.

They absolutely talked about how mismatched the commies' defense is against the Lions' offense. 6.8 ypc against nickel formations for Detroit, commies defense 26th against TEs, huge mismatch of St Brown vs their slot corner...
@t4d0W11 күн бұрын
Because part of the regular season scores are inflated by the Lions beating on really bad defenses. That said against the Comms I don't think the Lions have to score 45 to win out. They just gotta play the same ball control strat the Comms want to and it better in the 2nd half. I also don't trust this Lions defense to keep out Jayden Daniels especially if Glenn chooses to blitz as his way to get pressures on the young QB. But if you limit his possessions it keeps things more simple.

Love the show - but Jaylen Watson IS a gamechanger. He was in the top 5 in grading for CBs before getting hurt this year, and the Chiefs D was even BETTER than last year before he was hurt. Their rush D went from being ok at best last year to being elite this year, while having the pass D close to as suffocating this year. Watson is a hugely impactful addition that puts the secondary back in their most optimal natural roles

You guys need to start mentioning Devonta Smith more in these little talks. He is one of the most clutch WRs in the league and gets few props. He is usually mentioned as an afterthought or not at all. Rams ignore him at their peril.

As always - the brainy-est NFL pod out there. If you're going to do analysis, do it like this. Amidst all of this bulls*** talk about "who is qualified to talk football with former players - i.e. people in 'the know' v. Eye Candy that Sells, Mina Kimes continues to represent for folks who didn't play, but who are dedicated to data and the analysis that it bears - but who also is a fan of the games, and is all in the sport. There is an especially dangerous trend I've noticed on social media in wake of the Charlie Dixon/Skip Bayless lawsuit, to suddenly start questioning the very existence of women in NFL analysis. Mina Kimes lays waste to all that type of retrograde opinion, I believe.
@woofer1312 күн бұрын
Mina, Mina, Mina, you mentioned all the penalties that the Bills had in their game against the Ravens, and implied that it was one of the reasons for the blowout. The Bills had only 4 penalties, the Ravens 8 penalties, and the Ravens had more than twice the yardage charged against them.
@mikep381312 күн бұрын
She implied that the penalties were part of the reason for the blowout. She implied that was the reason for the early drives to fail. You dig a hole early and need to abandon a lot of your offensive game plan. Regardless, I think she made it pretty clear that she believed that Derrick Henry and heavy personnel was the main reason for the blowout. When you got 2,200 pounds of mass blocking for you you're gonna have some holes.
@woofer1312 күн бұрын
@@mikep3813 Your first sentence is exactly what I said. Maybe you missed that she mentioned it 3 times though. On another note, are you aware that the Ravens had more penalties and more yards against them than any other team this season? I guess that means that the Ravens should have a 0-17 record. If those 4 penalties hindered the Bills, and made them lose early on, are you suggesting that the 8 penalties on the Ravens were all done late in the 4th quarter so that it didn't matter to them?

The Bills base defense is nickel/big nickel. It is designed to sack quarterbacks, not stop the run. This feels like a nightmare matchup for Buffalo.
@Samhinkieknew12 күн бұрын
It’s definitely not designed to sack the QB. It’s designed to prevent explosive plays in the passing game and to force long, sustained drives as the only way to allow TDs.

It's funny to me how the national football media is still coming to grips with Stafford being a feast-or-famine quarterback. It's how you can tell no one really ever covered the Lions. There's a reason he started gaining the name "Stat Patford" here in Detroit. His "Feast" just happens to be so high, if you have the team around him to mitigate it (like the Rams mostly do) it won't affect the team as much. As a certified Rams hater, I love Bill's call on their game against the Eagles.
