TBH the original comic book Earth-616 Agatha Harkness was seriously a rip off of the OG Disney Cinderella villain, Lady Tremaine. The bouffant graying hairstyle, the perpetual scowl, the purple leg-o-mutton dress, the cat named Scratch (a nickname for the devil)--all of this is a blatant ripoff of Lady Tremaine (whose cat was named Lucifer). Which is still simultaneously super duper classic, even if it's a ripoff. Plus, Disney owns both, soooo

also i think wandas outfits were good from a plot and narrative perspective as well because she always wanted to be in just an ordinary happy idealised life with vision, just like a sitcom. it perpetuates the idealised housewife of the 50s to the moms of the 80s in a completely typical way, which is how she always wanted to be seen

This is SO fascinating. The note at the beginning about using accessories and textures and such to help differentiate characters in black and white sitcoms really makes so much sense. During the pandemic, I've been watching a lot of old black and white films and have quickly realized how much I usually depend on costume and hair colors to differentiate characters. It can be really hard to figure out who is who sometimes when you don't have any color to help you out!

I have a hunch (maybe more wishful thinking honestly) that Wanda's "pregnant dress" in the seventies episode is a reference to Barbra Streisand's dark red, long-sleeved, and empire waist dress from Up the Sandbox (it's actually what she wears on the poster!). They even have the same neckline and a similar hairstyle! There's a scene in the movie where she wears that dress and has a dream about suddenly becoming pregnant; it plays a lot like that episode of Wandavision. It's a long shot because only about three people have seen that movie, but there are so many similarities that I can't help but wonder!

5:45 Commenting again for the interaction. I'm an in home geriatric nurse so my patients are exclusively people who were alive and usually married by the 1950s. Many of my patients were housewives in the 1950s and yes they did dress nicely and did wear makeup daily. They wouldn't leave the house to go grocery shopping without having hair and makeup done. Hair was especially easy since they went to the salon once a week or so to get it styled. They had house dresses that they wore to clean in and they always made sure to be put together by the time their husbands got home. of course they weren't vacuuming the house wearing high heels but that doesn't mean they weren't put together so if a neighbor stop by, like people often did without notice, they would still look nice and presentable you don't have to be wearing high heels and pearls to look nice and presentable. It was just expected. Sure there were some who didn't but that's in the minority from what I've seen. They had a routine. For example floors on Monday laundry Tuesday dusting Wednesday meal planning meal prep and grocery shopping Thursday ect. I advise everyone to talk to their elderly relatives and ask them about their life and what it was like living in the 1950s.

A lot of these sitcoms wouldn’t have a costume designer but they would have a wardrobe stylist who would put outfits together based on who the character is. Prime time soaps like Dynasty had a costumer designer, Nolan Miller, who created these opulent extravagant gowns and dresses for the show that they became as much a character as the actors themselves. One show I know that didn’t have a designer was the original Degrassi because the characters would wear their own clothes to make it seem more realistic to an actual junior high/high school.

I mean we have time for that even though we work. Maybe we don’t always bother and some never (and certainly during Covid) but it can be done just fine with routine. And housewifes didn’t just stay inside the whole day either.

That part about how tv execs from the 70's would buy rather than make the clothing for the shows is interesting. I wonder if that's why in the credits for shows in this era you often see wardrobe by rather than costumes by.

The details (especially in the 50s episode) were so absolutely gorgeous, right down to the bullet bra and girdle! I just wish they’d done her hair a /little/ bit neater, it didn’t seem to be fully brushed out and was a bit too stiffly curled. I think it should have been smoothed out more, or even if they’d gone balls-to-the-wall and given her the Lucille Ball poodle updo!

I loved this show, i can't believe it was Marvel who did this and the movies from the mcu. Elizabeth Olsen did a stunning job with her acting changing with the decades while preserving the essence of the character. The costume department deserves all the awards

I'm not a huge fan of Marvel but out of the few films I've watched Wanda is one of the characters that I got invested with the most. I have Disney + now so I think I should watch it also because of the amazing outfits 😊

Aw, fun video but I'm kinda bummed out you didn't talk about Vision's outfits at all! I know feminine fashion is generally more fun to talk about, but I really got a kick at some of Vision's outfits (altho I'm a guy so...lol). My favorites included the atomic-themed office getup and...uuuh everything about his 70s aesthetic. That actor pulls off 70s hair very well. I did appreciate the nod to Monica's fashion though, shame KZbin copyrighted you there. :D

Yes!! I’m really into this show lately. Also, I’m wondering, can you cover the fashion in the Assassin’s Creed series next? I’m actually curious if the costumes in the games are historically accurate or not. 🤔🤔
