Hi Mina. What do you like better about this pouring medium compared to your old one of Liquitex pouring medium and floetrol?
@MinaVillegasArtАй бұрын
I still like the Liquitex, and I do use it still.. Mostly for things that need a thinner consistency though. The thing that I like better about the gel gloss is that I can get that thicker velvety consistency with it. The thicker consistency gives me a lot more control over the paint while tilting and keeps the lines or fingerlings or composition intact. The are both great tools for your toolbox, each with a different purpose.

Thanks for the pm tutorial. I'm about to attempt it with Gel gloss and Australian floetrol, as I'm from Australia. I heard the American floetrol is thicker than the Australian, so I'm thinking I might need to use more gel gloss in my pm..
@MinaVillegasArtАй бұрын
Honestly, with as much as the Aussie Floetrol costs us here in the States, I would not use it to make pouring medium. Perhaps you could try the gel gloss and water and add paint to that, and then just add a little of the Aussie Floetrol. You could ask your hardware store if they carry a different paint conditioner, which is what American Floetrol is. (I hope it's not nearly as pricey as the Aussie Floetrol!) The gel.gloss and water should work tho.. I wish you the best of luck! Do you have access to Owatrol there? You could use that in place of Floetrol.. you would just need to add more water because it's thick.

I’m wondering what you said about what thickness for the different pours? I’m new working on my pours. I have the soft golden gloss and pebeo medium. If you have time could you give me an idea? Thank you just found your channel so happy 😊✌️
@MinaVillegasArtАй бұрын
Hi Trish! Different types of pours use different consistencies of paint. For something like a Dutch pour or a blowout with a blow dryer, your paint would be very thin so that it moves easier with the blower. For something like a Wandering Straight Pour, where you want the lines and fingerlings to keep their shape, a thicker consistency helps do that. Something like a flip cup is very forgiving, and most consistency paints are fine for that. You want all your colors to have the same consistency. If you want more blended colors and a softer, more diffuse look, use a thinner consistency. If you want lines and patterns that stay, try a thicker consistency. You will find what you are most comfortable working with, just keep playing! Enjoy yourself!

Hi Mina. Great job with teaching everyone how to mix floetrol and gel medium. When I watch you mix the paint, I think of you cooking in the kitchen whipping up all kinds of fast meals. I do have a question for you though. The mixer you used, I have one but it does not do the trick, it simply is not powerful enough. I looked on Amazon and tried to find one like you have but I don't see it. Can you please give me more info about the particulars regarding the cordless drill you have, i.e. .volts, speeds, amps, etc. Also, for the beater that you are using, did you need to buy an adapter or have HOA do some sort of retrofit in order to get the mixer to work? I'd really appreciate your feedback. Thanks so much!

Well I have been using the heavy gel gloss for about a year.And what you showed today will help me save on gel gloss and flotroel. I haven't been adding water to it. And a quick question, do you leave your paint and supplies outside?All the time?
@MinaVillegasArtАй бұрын
No I put them inside the yurt when I'm not pouring. It gets too cold outside to just leave them. The yurt has some insulation
@carlabeel8997Ай бұрын
I have questions 1. Do you still need to varnish or resin if using your PM 2. When using high viscosity paint do you use less or about the same amount of paint 3. Do you use about the same amounts on piggies or more gloss medium Thank you Mina ❤
@MinaVillegasArtАй бұрын
Carla this pm dries beautiful shiny, but if you feel you want more varnish you can absolutely varnish it, or resin it. You would use less of a thicker paint, but make sure the color is as deep as you want it. When mixing TLP, I disburse the pigments in a small amount of Isopropyl Alcohol and add that to my pouring medium. This is the only part that is different; instead of filling the cup with straight Floetro, I would fill the rest of the cup with pouring medium so that the consistency is the same as other paints (the alcohol does thin it out somewhat)

Amazing tutorial Mina! Thank you so much for sharing! I’ve watched many of your videos and am using what I thought was almost the same pouring medium ingredients 😳until now! This might explain my slight lack of cells maybe. Being in Australia, I have easy access to Aussie flo… so I have had to modify a bit. I am mixing my paints with my PM made up of heavy gloss gel and Aussie flo. But I’m not then just adding straight flo after the initial PM like you showed in your video. If I did this, my paint would be very runny. Do you think using the mix of all heavy gel gloss and flo with paint could be causing an issue?? I hope this makes some sort of sense and isn’t too much of a crystal ball type question. Thank you ☺

@ thanks for the reply Mina. I might have a chat at the hardware store and see if they can recommend something else, although the Aussie floetrol isn’t as expensive for us here (at least I don’t think 😳. Approx US$35 per jug/gallon). I am now eager to try just the gel gloss and water though as well. Aaagghh too many options and combinations to try… just got to choose where to start first. Such a nice ‘problem’ to have. Thank you again for your advice and your always informative and entertaining videos from yourself and HOA. Merry Christmas to you and your family 🎄🎄🎄❤️

May I ask a question please? You mentioned that you were going to mix a flow extender- what do you mean? Thank you😊
@MinaVillegasArtАй бұрын
Great question! A Base Coat covers the entire canvas before you pour, it's function being to let your pour have something to slide and move around on. A Flow Extender is the same thing, except that I do my pour first, and put the flow extender around it before I tilt. You can use leftover paints as a flow extender, mostly I use what I scrape off my table as the flow extender. When I said I was going to mix up a flow extender I was going to mix up more white paint to use as a flow exterior, but decided that I already had enough paint and didn't need it. To figure out how much paint you'll need (as a guideline) multiply the length by the width of your canvas, then divide by 28. So for a 12x12: 12x12=144. Then 144 ÷28 is 5.14. So you would need to have about 5 ounces of paint to cover your canvas. I recommend you always mix a bit more, just in case. I hope this helps! Have an excellent day! ❤️
@andiortega4164Ай бұрын
Thank you so much. Treasure of information and I truly appreciate your expertise and talent. 💕 Have you ever tried this mixture on coasters ?

Ok, I try to just flow, I really do. 😂 I’ll get there. Question: if you’re going to use the soft gel gloss, do you use start with more gel? Double? 1.5?
@MinaVillegasArtАй бұрын
The thing I would alter would be how much Floetrol you add to the soft gel. Again, you are mixing it to the consistency that YOU like. You can always add more Floetrol. If you start with double the amount of gel you are going to end up with a LOT of pm! A 1:3 or 1:4 ratio of gel: Floetrol has worked the best in my experiments
@heatherleighartistryАй бұрын

Ok, so a beginner question (I haven’t poured yet - still watching videos after 2 years). You said any gel gloss will work. Does that include Varathane Triple Thick Polyurethane or Minwax Polycrylic (sp)?
@MinaVillegasArtАй бұрын
No, those are types of varnish (for use after the painting is dry).. the Gel Gloss is more like pudding or paste. It's main function is to give your paint some binders to adhere to, and to add body to your paints, to make them easier to control while you tilt.
@corbrothers1517Ай бұрын
Most people use just paint and water or if they use Floetrol just Floetrol and paint with a bit of water. What is the purpose of adding the gel gloss medium to the mixture? What benefit does it provide in your opinion? Thank you,
@MinaVillegasArtАй бұрын
That's a great question! Floetrol is a paint conditioner, not a pouring medium. That means that it does not contain any binding agents to bind with the paints. You are also stuck with whatever consistency that bottle of Floetrol is, unless you want to add a ton of paint. Using the gel gloss in the pouring medium actually binds to the pigments and allows them to be more elastic and stretch without breaking or separating. It also creates a thicker velvety consistency, which allows for more control of the paint while tilting, and the thickness keeps your lines and composition intact. The last benefit is that it dries with a beautiful satin finish, without additional varnishing. If you enjoy the thinner consistency pours, then you may not need the gel gloss pouring medium. In my experience, using only paint and water uses significantly more paint, which is more expensive than a few ounces of gel gloss. I hope this answers your questions. Have a great day and thanks for watching!

@MinaVillegasArtАй бұрын
The Gel Gloss is a binder that adheres to the pigments and allows them to stretch without breaking. It also adds body to my paint, making it easier to control while tilting. The Floetrol smooths the paint and increases the volume of paint that you make (fairly cheaply if you are in the US)
