The Mob Reporter here with details on Genaro García Luna, who led Mexico’s version of the FBI and then was the federal Secretary of Public Security under President Felipe Calderón. While he was sworn to fight drug traffickers, he really was helping narcos move 55 tons of cocaine, by boat, by airplane and by narco-submarine, while taking millions of dollars in bribes. This is serious business.
He portrayed himself as a crusading anti-drug strongman, dubbed the country’s “supercop”, standing up to drug cartels in a country where that’s a dangerous proposition. He was a man America could do business with. He worked closely with the DEA, FBI and CIA. In 2019, García Luna was arrested in Dallas, Texas, and charged with large-scale drug trafficking conspiracy. In January 2023, he stood in Brooklyn, New York, before the same judge who had sentenced El Chapo Guzman, the notorious Sinaloa Cartel leader. He pleaded not guilty. His trial assembled former cartel narcos to point their dirty fingers: Jesús Zambada, known as “El Rey”, who is the brother of Ismael Zambada García, known as “El Mayo,” El Chapos partner at the top of the cartel; Sergio Villarreal Barragán, known as “El Grande”; Harold Mauricio Poveda Ortega, a Colombian narco known as “El Conejo”; Oscar Nava Valencia, known as “El Lobo”; Edgar Veytia, a corrupt state attorney general known as “El Diablo”; Tirso Martínez, known as “El Futbolista”; and Israel Avila. Watch for all the juicy details…
