The liquid mirror idea reminds me of the mirror-making section in Lois McMaster Bujold's "Falling Free." The characters have to craft an extremely precise type of mirror using salvaged materials; it's crazy but the key factor that lets them succeed is in fact the micro-gravity around their space habitat. Very cool!

Simon. Thanks to the whole team for another great video! The space elevator concept is well within our current technology IF we think of putting it on Mars or the moon. The shallower gravity well of either would reduce the tensile requirements of the cables. In addition, it would be a lot less risky to install an elevator on a largely uninhabited celestial body. Taking the thought even further, one could see the extra-terrestrial elevators as testing grounds for developing technologies which might lead to achieving a second or third generation elevator capable of installation on earth. A Mars installation would be very, very helpful as it would eliminate landing and liftoff requirements from the very dusty surface and, thus, would make shipping supplies much less expensive. I invite you to explore this idea further in a future video!
@UpperDarbyDetailing

It's within current tech on Earth too. Our main issue is mass producing graphene. I don't really like space elevators much. We'd be much better off with an orbital ring, and that's actually easier. Although a space elevator on Luna is still a great idea, at least as a first step to building a lunar ring.

The "material" could be spun into a lens shape ! - the probe with its telescope cameras etc - adjusts its focal lenght by move away from the disk of frozen material floating in space - like the old bellow cameraz Hope i have given away someones trade secretz - ooopz

One small correction. The Dragonfly is actually a hexacopter, that is it has 6 rotors instead of 4. It was deemed to be more reliable as 2 rotors could fail and still be usable. Similar to why the moon buggies ad rovers have 6 wheels.

The problem with a space elevator is not really a lack of interest, but a total lack of feasibility until we make major breakthroughs in material science. Launching rockets to Mars is expensive and difficult, but it’s feasible - we have plenty of experience launching rockets. We are improving an existing technology rather than creating new technologies based on presently non-existent materials. Carbon Nanotubes might be able to do the job, but we can only produce ones that are a couple centimeters long… Space mining and industry might be an easier next step, but we’ll need to rockets to get that going.

I’ve always understood the solar sail concept (thank you Star Trek DS9) but how would these devices as described keep from ripping apart at certain speeds as the square footage of them at this time would be quite large and could potentially be ripped apart by 1 of 2 way. Going too fast and putting too much stress on the structure or micro meteors going so fast that they rip through enough of the structure to prevent it from either getting to its destination or simply throwing it off course altogether
@TheDaneofCoosCounty
@TheDaneofCoosCounty Жыл бұрын
They SAY that’s the goal of Europa but if they DONT find life (which is the more likely scenario and have likely planned for it as well) do they just start harvesting said water and dispersing it to earth for a price after filtering it for other gases and materials which they’d either use themselves or sell to the highest bidder? Aka promoting big name companies for profit…

@UpperDarbyDetailing
@UpperDarbyDetailing Жыл бұрын
@@TheDaneofCoosCounty likely the sails will be graphene. They'll also eventually have some form of laser for sweeping the space ahead of the craft. Between the two it'll be fine. Speed alone can't damage it, too high of an acceleration can. Not really a problem with sails.
@krisgonynor689
@krisgonynor689 Жыл бұрын
We probably know enough about the space environment to predict how much of the solar sail would be lost to impacts of micro meteors. You would just build the mirror large enough to account for such losses over time. Speed is also not a problem, the entire solar sail would always be going at the same speed as the photons propelling it should be equal across the entire sail. Unless it was side swiped by a large solar flare or something like that, the 'wind from the sun' is constant in both velocity and impact over the entire surface area. A bonus would be if the solar sail or parts of it were also solar panels, then you would have the power needed to operate the computers and sensors.

I’m curious if there are any thoughts on the fine particles on mars being poisonous to the extreme for humans, and what that might mean for realistically colonizing mars? Can it be made economically feasible to extrude the perchlorates and other toxins, or if it’s more realistic to find somewhere else to put our colonization efforts

A lot of the probes used to explore our solar system have nuclear power plants because sunlight past Mars don’t have enough energy to power solar cells. So how far could a solar sail take a space craft?
@QBCPerdition
@QBCPerdition Жыл бұрын
The biggest advantage of a solar sail is two-fold. 1) the acceleration is constant. It is true that solar radiation drops off fairly quickly, but even a little bit still adds some thrust. And if the sail tacks around the inner solar system for a bit to build up speed, it can get booking along pretty quickly. Which leads to 2) Newton's First Law of Motion. Once the solar sail is zooming, there isn't much to force it to slow down, and just as with other spacecraft, gravitational assists could be performed to give it an even greater boost of speed. Similar to the question of whether you would want $1,000 now, or take a penny one day, 2 pennies the next day, and keep doubling the value for a month...small things add up. Even if the force of a single photon from the sun is barely perceptible, tons of photons constantly hitting the sail will add up. The beginning is slow, and does take some time to get going, but it could get out to Pluto much faster than the New Horizons probe did, and that is the fastest probe we have ever sent out into space.

@@dianapennepacker6854 no, not PDE's RDE's. RDE's are the way to go because of thrust and efficiency. think about how you could use that massive thrust in space for a few seconds and be going faster than any other craft could propel its self with current tech. PDE's are far more efficient but produce less thrust because its pulsated. RDE is truly impressive tech that is limited by materials. it just gets too hot even with the copper based alloy NASA is using for it, limits it to only a 2 minute burn which is still intense when a German engineering team has a much smaller version that can only operate for 1-3 seconds before beginning to melt its combustion chamber.

And surely the only satellite the cable could be attached to would be in geosynchronous orbit, otherwise the cable would just end up being wrapped around the planet. Even our own sun is going to destroy earth eventually. We also need a station orbiting farther out so there is less chance of collision with space junk.

@@mikeharris5681 I hope you are not... Do you REALLY think Nasa don't have the tech to film a big moon-car on the Moon? And they say they lost the tech on how to go back to the moon! haha....You would think they saved the Data for the worlds most amazing moment in History on 20 000 Copies.

@@janlassen6101 You realise space has a few things that might mess with cameras, right? And has to be bare-bones considering there's no studio infrastructure up there and weight is very limited? When they said "lost the tech", you think it was unsaved data...? Many of the engineers with the experience had died. It was a "use it or lose it" kind of knowledge set. Stop falling for bs from attention-seeking conspiracy theorists.

@@Vaeldarg So now they have problem reaching the moon?. ok strange when you know that the Tech has advanced 50-100 times since that time..... Today it would be pretty easy compared to back then. You have at home a Computer that is 1000+ times more powerful than what they used. Space-People died so we don't know how to get to the moon again because they forgot to tell the other people at Nasa hehe... (I am beginning to think Nasa don't deserve the Mega Billions they get for playing space) You know as well as i do that information that is extremely important is saved in any way possible 100% safely in Vaults

People think we are going back to The Moon and going to Mars and then going out into deeper and deeper Space,but if you look long and hard at The Moon and if you look long and hard at The Sun with your own eyes hopefully you will realize that The Moon and The Sun are inside the earth.Also if you use a personal video camera to look at The Moon and The Sun and zoom in on them;you will see very precise details and pigments on them.These precise details and pigments are only visible and only possible if The Moon and The Sun are actually inside The Earth.If The Moon and The Sun are visible inside The Earth that means that they really are inside The Earth.And if The Moon and The Sun are inside The Earth then The Stars and The Constellations are also inside The Earth,because we can also see them inside The Earth.The Bible mentions something called:"The Firmament" - which is a giant sky dome enveloping The Earth above us.The Bible says that The Firmament displays God's glory and it also says that God placed The Stars "in" The Firmament,which means that The Stars and The Constellations are inside The Firmament,which also means that The Stars and The Constellations are inside The Earth and if The Stars and The Constellations are inside The Earth this means that The Moon and The Sun are also inside The Earth.Now since The Moon,The Sun,The Stars and The Constellations are inside The Earth as confirmed by The Bible,our own eyes and our own senses this means that The Earth itself is Flat and has been Flat All-along.Since The Earth is Flat this means that Outer Space doesn't exist and if Outer Space doesn't exist then All of those incalculable numbers of Planets,Solar Systems,Galaxies and even other neighboring Universes don't exist either,because they never existed to begin with.And again this means that there aren't any existing Extraterrestrial Beings out there,only Evil Spirits and deceptive Biblical Demons.So we are Never,Never Never going to The Moon or to Mars or to Outer Space.It is All a lie and it is All a insidious deception.Extraterrestrial Beings and Outer Space are the greatest and most powerful deceptions of All,because they are so extraordinary and captivating,because they promise tremendous freedom and potential for Humans and because they offer Humans a fantastic future without God.Watch out for "Those" people who are promising you Great New Experiences and Outer Space."Those" people are False Prophets and are the most-dangerous False Prophets of All,because of their great influence and success.It can and will only get worse and worse and worse from here on.This World Wide Deception will once again lead to The End Of Humanity And The Battle Of Armageddon!

The World-Earth was formed and created by The Christian God over more than 6000 years ago.The Earth is a large flat motionless disk with one giant dome over it called:The Firmament with rocky depths below.The Kingdom Of Heaven where God,The Angels and The Saints live is above The Firmament,while Hell where The Demons,The Fallen Angels and The Sinners live is probably under The Earth or even located somewhere in Heaven.There are 7 Regions in Heaven.The Firmament is 73 miles high.The Sun,The Moon,The Stars and The Constellations are inside The Firmament.The Sun is about 52-53/54-55 kilometers in circumference,while The Moon is about 51-52 kilometers in circumference.The Sun and The Moon orbit around The Earth 50/50.The Stars might be Angels.The Earth is 60 000 miles in circumference,but it might also be more.The Islands and The Continents are at the center of The Earth,surrounded by The Ocean and The Ocean itself is surrounded by a 45 meter or more high Ice Ring,which is also 60 000 miles in circumference around The Earth. There might be extra Islands and Continents beyond The Giant Ice Ring.The North Pole is actually at the center of The World,while The 60 000 mile Ice Ring is actually Antarctica itself.There are primordial waters above The Firmament and under The Firmament.There is only One World/One Earth;there are no other Worlds.There is only Heaven,Hell and The Earth! The Giant Ice Ring is mercilessly patrolled and guarded by The Antarctic Treaty System to prevent people from realizing that The World/Earth is a Flat Domed Disc!

Item 7 is why l think pretty much the entire SETI initiative as currently practiced is a waste of time and resources. If there are advanced civilizations out there practicing interstellar communication, surely they are using lasers or something else which is vastly superior to radio, and which will never be detected by our radio telescopes.
