Here is something i have wondered: how different would star maps look if we adjusted for the light travel time to earth? If the stars in the milky way were positioned how they actually are right now and not where their old light shows them to be to us, how would it look? Edit: thank you for making this my most read ever comment! I am going to go hide under my rock until all the social interaction goes away lol. But for real, thanks for giving me some stuff to think about!

Hello Anton and this gives us the ability map galaxies while a few thousand years ago we didn’t even know hat the Earth looked like. It’s truly amazing how humans have come with technology. This will be a great accomplishment for astronomer being able to map things well. Also we can buy picture of structures in space like pulsars, nebula etc. Modern telescope have done a great job of mapping the night sky. This new way of photography is surreal.

I've heard that if we compare Exploratory Astronomy to the historical exploration of the Earth, we're in the "age" of Magellan, that is with a lot the outlines known but our knowledge having large gaps on the map that many busy folks are working their tails off to fill in... We may never map all of the Milky Way, but then we still have huge parts of the Earth we have barely a clue about... And to forestall any incredulous protestations to the contrary in this time of satellite mapping and high technology just go look up the percentage of the ocean floor we've actually explored. It's quite small, really... It just means that there are more than one "final frontiers". Thanks S W.

Imagine how much further we'd be if we made science and discovery a priority over spending trillions of dollars iver recent years for "" defense "" trying to be the world's policemen. Although these advances are great , just think where we'd be if we had our priorities in order and focused on our shared survival instead of investing in new and more efficient ways to eliminate each other which has made defense companies filthy rich using our tax dollars ? Department of defense budget for this year $778 billion dollars, NASA budget $27 billion dollars, that pretty much says it all where our priorities are at .

You only need 1 telescope to do this, you just need to wait for the telescope to orbit the sun and take 1 picture from each end of its orbit. We actually do this all the time and any telescopes orbiting the earth can act as 2 telescopes 2 au apart.
