Shanks deliberately lost his arms because at that point luffy had already eaten Nika fruit and thus was expected to be the next joyboy and finish his duty. So shanks wanted luffy to feel indebted to shanks when shanks sacrificed his arms to save him, also to ensure luffy proceed on the path of joyboy , shanks gave his hat to him and asked him to return when he becomes as great as him. All this gestures inspired luffy and gave him reasons to become greatest pirate of all time. Which obviously is needed to complete the prophecy and liberate the word.

Just a theory but what i think is that the truth and the prophecy was learnt by Roger when he reached laghtale, Realising the timeline is not in his favour as he was dying and it was 20 years in future, Roger gave the important job of ensuring everything works smoothly to shanks , which he’s being doing all this time. Also maybe because of the timing Roger might have thought that the next Joyboy could be his son Ace as he knew his wife was pregnant at the time and in 20 years Ace will be at peak if his youth. So maybe Shanks was planning to give Nika fruit to Ace but as we all know it was in Luffy’s fate so he must’ve realised that and continued to believe in luffy.

Also again a theory , i think when luffy will meet Shanks and return the strawhat, shanks wanting to test luffy’s strength will do the foxy pirate’s game , but more serious this time with real fights, where we could see Ussop clashing with Yassop (his dad) and luffy with Shanks. In the end strawhats will win and will be in position to choose one member from shank’s crew, and guess what, luffy will choose the strawhat because obviously the strawhats wouldn’t be strawhats without the iconic strawhat. I think all of this will occur in Elbaf, where Ussop will also gain alot of followers and where Robin will discover another Road Ponegliff

Also Long Ring arc felt very filler like and unnecessary but was actually canon, we know Oda wouldn’t make it canon if it is not necessary in the main storyline. Just like littlegarden arc was connected to Enies Lobby and in general ussop’s relationship with giants. I think the purpose of long-ring arc was to familiarise us with the game to make us ready for the future. Also a small way for Oda to showoff how far he was planning ahead while release the early stage of the manga/anime.
