The song has been an unofficial national anthem for a very long time. The fact that it did not become official until 2019 is probably due to someone suddenly discovering that it had never been designated as official. I was born in the sixties, and all my life "Ja vi elsker" has been considered the Norwegian national anthem.

A toast to Norway and Sons of Norway were unoffcial national anthems as well. Some Englishmen might recognize a piece of A toast to Norway. "Norway, home of the giants" which Bjørge Lillelien made into "England, home of the giants" in Lillelien's rant after Norway defeated England in football World Cup qualification at Ullevål in 1981. 'Yooooouuuur boys took one hell of a beating! Yooooouuur boys took one hell of a beating!'

Winter all year? I visited Tromso one summer and it was about 26C every day with 24-hour sunshine. This week (end of May 2024) I saw a headline saying that the temperature in northern Norway had reached 29.1C (compared to London managing a measly 14C to 18C).

I live in Arctic Norway. Ofcourse winter all year is a misconception and exaggeration. On the other hand the winter is long and dark. Sure, sometimes Arctic Norway summer set European heat record (at specific days). Ofcrouse that is more rare

I'm a 60 y.o. Norwegian and have NEVER heard the national anthem perfomed in a church or any christian service settings.. Not even on our Constitution Day (May 17th).. 🙂Also I think the blue northern cross in our flag is the old Swedish blue, not Finnish.. Norway was in a union with Sweden from 1814 to 1905 (the Swedes changed their blue colour to the modern light blue in 1906). The red is as you say from the Danish flag "Dannebrog" (we were part of Denmark from the 1300s to 1814). Finally: It's not perpetually winter in Norway (summer temperature of over 30 is not unusual). In my part of Norway (south west) there's never snow even in winter (it rains..). 🙂

The Norwegian flag was when I was young called dannebrogselva because of the the blue cross in the middle, witch is the only thing that is different in a way between the Danish and Norwegian flag.

That video uses a poetic translation of the lyrics. While in the same spirit, they are pretty far from the original text.

Norway is a very beautiful country. It was difficult to survive in this pile of stones in the past, but nowadays it is very easy to love the country. The song was written in the national romantic heyday, and those who defined "the Norwegian" hardly had problems getting food on the table. They saw something other than what hungry, small farmers and fishermen saw. Useless land such as rocky and steep mountain sides that plunged into the fjords formed a beautiful backdrop to the setting sun. Snow-covered mountain peaks, which were a sign of a bad growing season, were useless but picturesquely beautiful against blossoming apple trees down in the valleys. Yes we love this country. It gives us everything we need to have a good life as long as our politicians don't throw what the country gives to corrupt thugs from other parts of the world.

It is NOT snow all year around. We have 4 wonderful seasons full of its own magic, and the snowy one - called winter - is +- 4 month long. And is full of skis, outdoors and other rumping in heaps of snow. And we love it. The ice on pavements in cities not so much :)

So incase people are annoyed about the things I got wrong in this video, I guess I'm sorry. It is really hard to gauge what life must really be like without actually living there etc. However, if their are things that I should try and improve on them I am more than open to answering them to the point of doing another video as well.

£1 for a bag of crisps is incredibly cheap. It's about £3 for the cheapest one in Norway around £3 or £4 is more normal. A beer costs £4 in a store and at least £10 in a pub. Have a deep pocket if you want to visit us. Great reaction to the national anthem:)
@BastianNorW8 ай бұрын
And btw, on the flag, it's called a "Scandinavian cross" The Norwegian colours isn't related to any other Scandinavian country. It was inspired by the French colours for Libertè, Fraternite and Egalite. The Icelandic mirrored the Norwegian flag though, and that's because all of them were Norwegians 800 years ago.

There is actually no minimum wage in Norway, but everyone expect 9 sectors that's too avoid foreigner, but of course we got the "tariffavtaler" and also we have one of the best unionized. Most of the american people hate the idea, why? I get it. They hate the socialismn system, but they don't get it we ain't socialismn, but socialism democratic system. That's even better. Because the country are so small with so few citizen (just about 5.5 million) it's so easy too make the government adding up with new supports. For example when the first time we had electricty price crisis couple years ago after few protests and after few hundred people were in front of the government building protested we got a law that would protect every citizen against the electricty price crisis. We are still getting 90% support everything above 0,90 kroner kwh. It has been some small changes since the beginning it was then at 70% above 0,90 kwh. That again are amazing with the government. Most of the people because there ain't that huge of unbalanced with the income so they can understand how is it for the most of the people when it's a bad period. People need too understand that socialism democratic system are one of the reason Norway become so wealthy. In fact every every 27.5 people in Norway are dollarmillionaire and that's included the kids are born so the stats would in theory be even higher then that without the kids. It's insane numbers. Just within my family and closest too me i know alot of people who is controlling a billion company. Most of my family have controlled a store and business that's above $4,000,000 and about 90% of everyone i know has controlled a business that's above $500,000 in revenue. Norway has right now about $1,657 trillion worth in stocks, bonds etc. and within two years Norway has put $180 billion too the Oilfund that's a year expenditure for Norway and included these $180 billion they did (oilfund) make about $330 billion in last year with the $70 billion recieved by the Norway. That's saving ratio about 50% last two years! That's crazy numbers for the country, but Oilfund had almost going up 26% in one year. But i get it American people hate saving money, everything they wan't too do are spending them. It's very easy too become very wealthy in Norway, but we don't really talking about the money not us. But i think it's kinda cool that our government actually own alot of shares in the biggest companies in the world and could make them listen at our norwegian ideas. When the oilfund are talking the world richest people and biggest companies they are actually listening at us. Many times Oilfund has denied the biggest chef bonuses for example. That's so powerful and the oilfund would indirectly fall 40% because norwegian currency are so week, but would anyway most likely be owning more stocks and companies in the future. In fact Norway are owning about 1.5% all companies that's in the open marked. Almost every top 100 in the world. In fact Norway are one of the biggest owner of Tesla, Microsoft and Apple.
