Interesting stuff! I disagree that the L.A shootout was a setup to assassinate DeFreeze. If they were intending to kill everyone inside that included, to their knowledge, Patty Hearst. It was hardly a smooth operation from the LAPD side, very hurried in its execution literally hours after the SLA was located. They were in panic mode because they were outgunned, running out of ammo and tear gas. They had been denied requests for frag weapons during the shootout. They used the incendiary gas grenade after over an hour because they were running out of indoor-approved ones. They also could not allow LAFD to approach the scene until the shooting from the house stopped, which turned out to be after it was fully engulfed in flames. SLA had some pretty unusual stuff in their arsenal including a Browning Automatic Rifle and C4 explosive that they used to make the mini-grenades used during the shootout. People with that kind of stuff tend to have friends in high places. Funny that nobody thought to ask how this group of eight wannabes got such an arsenal. The government's solution to the Black Panthers was essentially to buy them off, which was well underway by 1973. Huey Newton was living in a luxury penthouse by that time. He was for all intents and purposes working in the government's interest, driving the more radical elements out of the BPP. The story of DeFreeze's escape reminds me of the story of James Earl Ray's escape.
