I am glad to have found your channel. I'm just about to resume playing the piano again after more than 20 years and am documenting this on my channel. The first thing I realized is that I've completely lost the ability to play by heart, which used to be effortless. Your valuable tips just come in the right time for me. Thank you very much for this video!

There is also the solfeggio memory i use it a lot because my visual memory is not so good... Many artists use solgeggio memory.. an example is Jonathan Fournel, winner of queen Elisabeth competition

One thing that isnt mentioned is mental playback. That means visulization and from an auditory standpoint. Inner hearing without the aid of an external stimulus.

To me it seems backwards. Why would I ever memorize a piece if I can sight read it hands together? I've never seen anyone for whom memorizing is harder than reading. The reverse is always true in my experience.

Hehe, it all comes with experience. Memorization is harder than sight reading. Experienced pianists can sight read so good that it almost feels unnatural. But memorization takes longer at the end of the day it all comes to this: how many repetitions are needed in order to memorize.

@@robertvasi that was exactly my point. I find it hard to believe there are people for whom memorization is harder than reading.

Thank you for the interesting comment! Memorizing is a huge struggle for a lot of people. It all depends on the goal- sometimes you have to play by memory ( if you are music student or professional). Plus it is a nice mental challenge to put yourself through :)

Very nicely put Alexandra. I would like to add, I can sight read very well, but I quickly realized that memorization is the only way for me (and serious professionals) to properly play the piano at high speed. It’s impossible to sight read most of Chopin’s work and hit keys correctly and on time. Sight reading is only part of the solution and unfortunately a slow process in my opinion. If people want to omit memorization from their practice then that’s a personal preference. For me, sight reading is much harder if depended on for fast tempo work. Memorization makes it easier and possible to play fast tempo. I have never seen a top rated pianist sight reading while performing fast complex work. It is certainly a science as piano excellence for life correctly describes. I hope this helps. @@alexandra.tsirkel

@@jeffh5388yes! Well put. I have never been very good at sight reading and yet in my younger days I memorized some impressive songs. Now getting back into serious playing again in my 60’s I’m realizing I have forgotten many of my pieces 😫 and again struggling with sight reading. I’m very excited about this lesson and working on memorization again.
