We always included our kids in the household budget talks. That way they knew that money didn't just come out of thin air. Also that if you want anything extra, you might have to work overtime or save a while for a special thing. You seem so sweet. Hope you have a great day!!!

Debt at 11:00 is what I'm working on because its hard to live well when making payments and not getting ahead. I took some money from savings to pay down my credit cards and its made a huge difference in the monthly fees, soon the debt will be paid off.

Great advice! I've watched a neighbor blowing through an inheritance and keep thinking... I hope they got a whole lot because they're spending like crazy! Buying only what you need and can afford is such a nicer way to live, much more peaceful. :-) Ditching credit and using cash was the best decision I ever made.

I don't let my kids know financial stress but I am teaching them to budget. They have a toy budget where they can put their allowance towards a larger toy each week or go get something from the dollar store more frequently. The odd time I take them out for a treat/meal I give them a budget and they check prices and find it fun to be under. I let them pocket he Change and put it in the toy fund if they come under. Seems to be working as at 5 and 7 they understand you need to save to get things you want

Wise words! I love your timely reminders. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos. I wish you would consider having a series of videos for kids. Appropriate for teens, the kinds of basic information they need to know. How it all works, you have a great of way explaining things and a lot of knowledge. Just an idea or maybe guidance for us parents who need to attempt it. Is it something you might do?

I have a question on the work hard, spend hard and entitlement mentality. I'm an author, and sometimes I've said things like, "When I finish this book I'll go for a massage." Interestingly enough, many times I end up not doing it because I don't want to spend the money! On the other hand, sometimes I'd like to reward myself for pushing myself to get something done even when I wanted to quit. Would love your thoughts on this, and whether or not rewarding yourself for accomplishing a big goal is the wrong type of mindset to have. Or perhaps there are better ways to celebrate accomplishing a big goal like that.

This is so so true my ex - husband does just that and is now brainwashing my 22 year old son to doing the same thing while teaching him that all the good things that I taught him is not good because he can not get what he wants when he wants it and then he is broke and he comes to me as though they think I get more money than I do when I actually get less money than they both do I just know how to manage my money much better.

I'm embarrassed to say I've seen myself in most of those mind sets. Here is a mindset you had no idea people have. The old folks living paycheck to paycheck say to themselves, I can't afford to wait two years to buy it I might not be here in two years. I am sick and I am old and if I need it I need it now...and sadly that is true. But it digs the debt deeper.

I love your videos, you've been such an inspiration to me. I have a question though. How do you battle the mindset that if I don't enjoy xyz while I'm young, I won't be able to enjoy it the same way when I'm retired and have the money saved up? (If I make it to retirement) An example, I'm a single 31 year old and I enjoy driving sportier vehicles. No vacations, no expensive clothes, this is the only thing I enjoy in life that costs money. I just paid off my car, am debt free apart from my mortgage, and run a lucrative Airbnb listing with my extra rooms. With that extra money I can easily afford to finance my dream car, a 90's model Acura NSX at an incredible interest rate. Wisdom would tell me to use the extra money, pay off the house, and save up for that car. More than likely, by that point I'll be married and the only other time in life I can purchase a vehicle like this will be after I'm retired. I may not even be alive at that point or be too old to enjoy driving anymore. Would this be a good enough reason to go ahead and purchase the vehicle? (Side note: these cars actually appreciate in value)

I would pay off the mortgage first. You will have many cars bought and sold by the time you retire. Get ahead now and stay ahead. If we say ok to the car, what else will we say ok to later down the line. When you look back at retirement you will see that paying off the house will have given you a security a car never could. It sounds like you might have already made up your mind though?
@Gbari7
@Gbari7 7 жыл бұрын
Interesting thoughts and thank you for your perspective. These opinions are what I'm looking for as I haven't completely made up my mind. Personally, I won't have bought and sold many cars by the time I retire and I'm disciplined enough to make this one dream purchase/investment (This car does appreciate in value). But I can see where you're coming from for people that don't have self control. My point was that if I make it to retirement ( I could die next year for all I know) I may be too old or infirm to enjoy driving like I can now. I would look back and have a wistful happiness that I paid my mortgage off but cannot enjoy the fruits of my labor the way I would like. I may be planning for the worst as far as my future circumstances, but isn't that what all frugal people do one way or the other?

Even when you have the cash to buy something it doesn't mean you can afford it or should necessarily buy it, because you have to balance all your wants and needs and decide which ones you really can afford.

Independence should not be that our young people should just be able to have the freedom to have a social life and material belongings and that they should eventually be able to support themselves by having a roof over their heads as well as food, clothing , transportation of their own not a borrowing situation from dear old dad or buddies who put you in the situation that you are in.
