Yesterday I was riding my halflinger without stirrups over a jumping course. I was having an awesome ride until the very last jump. My halflinger got excited and took off over the last jump. I tried to stay on but I slipped off and I slammed into the arena fence. My helmet split down the back side. I jumped up and I automatically felt dizzy. My parents got me to the ER as fast as possible. There was no concussion but my arm is completely tore up. All in all my helmet saved me from having a severe concussion. Wear your helmet kids.

I actually love wearing my helmet. I think it looks stylish... You'll forget about it being hot on your head. Plus when you ride, wind blows through the ventilation areas in the helmet. The one thing I don't understand is that, why are riding helmets made like road bike helmets? Wouldn't that be safer?

People should also recognize that an accident could be completely unrelated to the horse. You could have poor position up to a jump and get unbalanced and cause yourself to fall etc. People should just be aware that a helmet is your best method of safety, regardless of your discipline. Plus, you can find some pretty stylish, comfortable, ventilated and affordable models on the market these days!

When I first started learning how to canter, my horse got sick, so i had to ride one of the school horses, he was very impatient, and when i freaked out because is was quite fast, for a beginner rider, the horse bucked me off and i landed head first... I was fine, but i had to go to the hospital to check everything was fine... The doctor said if i hadn't have worn my helmet, i would have probably died, or had to have been classed as disabled, and never ride again... I'm so glad I didn't take that risk #mindyourmelon

I got a concussion a week ago because the horse I was riding, who is an incredibly chill horse who never acts out and I trust completely, decided to buck. I was thrown and thankfully only suffered a minor concussion (aka no brain bleeding). I stayed in bed for two days, taking advil around the clock and sleeping, and I can't ride or play sports for a couple of weeks. I was wearing my helmet. My injuries would've been so much worse had I ridden without one. The point I'm trying to make is that ANY HORSE CAN FREAK OUT AT ANY GIVEN TIME. They aren't a bicycle or a motorcycle. They have feelings, they react to their environment dramatically. I trust my horse, but I know that at any given time, he can get scared and freak out. I know it's not his fault, it's how his brain works. So I wear a helmet, not because I think something bad is going to happen, but because I know that it can. #mindyourmelon

To everyone going on about how they don't need a helmet and think they're too good for it, stop it please. Horse riding is defined as a RISK sport. Nobody makes excuses for not wearing helmets during a sport like football, and there's just as much of a risk of getting hurt in horse back riding as there is in football, even more so in certain situations.

When it comes down to it, it is a person's choice to wear a helmet or not. However, I am absolutely never going to ride without one. I have a great horse, but shit happens. I hated helmets until I got the Tipperary T2 and I hardly realize I'm wearing it once it's on. Please, put up with the aggravation of a hot helmet until you can afford a very nice helmet. They won't save you from everything, but they can be a huge help.

+Jamie Stone Going to disagree with you there. Riding a horse is more dangerous than people realize and the ratio of deaths due to head injuries due to lack of wearing a helmet is greater than anything out there. Yes, it's a personal choice when it comes down to it, but why chose NOT to? What's the point? It's a safety measure and if people think it can't happen to them, please go search here on youtube Courtney Dye King. If she could go back in time and use a helmet, she would still be able to dress herself, talk and walk with ease today

OMG I LOVE THIS> My grandmother was riding her Halflinger Jay on the trail about a month and a half ago with some friends when Jay spooked at her pulling out her water bottle. Jay ended up bolting and running her into a tree. She had to be air lifted to the hospital. She has a broken neck, broken her fourth and fifth vertebra and broke her wrist was broke too BUT only ended up with a concussion. She is now in a full halo for 3 months and after that comes off she has to wear another neck brace for 1 month. The Dr.s said if she hadn't have had a helmet on the force of the impact would have killed her. If it wasn't for her helmet I would be able to be with my grandmother who I love. Please please #mindyourmelon

This made me laugh... the Guru guy XD But I agree 100%! Who cares what other people think? This has actually happened to me: I was wearing my helmet and someone made fun of me for it, and that person wasn't wearing one. We were riding in the same ring in the county fair and someone set off fireworks. The fireworks weren't that close to the ring, but it was still very loud and both our horses spooked. We both fell off, but because I had my helmet on, I was uninjured. But the other person cracked their head open and got a concussion. #mindyourmelon

Whenever I feel like I don't want to wear a helmet since I'm a barrel racer, I watch this video and Fallon Taylor's video on why she wears a helmet. I think that it's good to promote helmet safety especially with young riders with me. But, if you don't want to wear a helmet, you don't have to. Just keep in mind that we have lost so many good people to not wearing a helmet. It is just one little piece of equipment that could save you're life one day.

I NEVER go without my helmet because one day a couple of years back I was riding my ' BOMB PROOF' horse when a car crashed into us - my horse reared up and fell on top of me. Without my back protector and helmet I would have had a lot more to deal with then 3 fractured ribs and extencive bruising. My horse was amazingly fine apart from a few scratches and mental trauma. Its just really sad to see people not protecting themselves against the unpredictable.

So true I am all for helmets, I just recently fell off while going over a jump and landed head first. When I hit all a saw was a red and white flash and then pain. I was not knocked out or anything and was able to get back on. But after my ride I realized I had no memory of the fall or anything else after for a bit. I went to the hospital just to get checked out to make sure and I found out that I had gotten a minor concussion. I was ok just had some head aches for the next few days but Im fine now, but if it where not for my helmet my concussion could of been bad or even worse. Im grateful for helmets!

Before this Spring, I was always annoyed with having to wear a helmet, but when I fell from my horse and cracked my helmet and suffered a pretty serious concussion (that I STILL feel the effects from): my attitude was completely changed. Now that I am able to think more clearly, I find myself thinking about how easily I could be dead right now. And I probably would be. I lost a whole week and a half of memory, two months of riding, and a month of school. I just wish that everyone would comprehend how dangerous head injuries really are. I am so grateful for my helmet, because without it my head would be cracked and not my helmet. Just a scary thought that can be so easily prevented with a simple helmet. #mindyourmelon

I ride both English and Western and wear a helmet. I have fallen off three times, once where if I wasn't wearing a helmet I would've cracked my skull (the arena was lined with a metal pipe fencing kind of thing, like some gates). The other two times I fell off a six foot tall horse over his neck and sideways. Luckily, when you end up on the ground from him spooking, he doesn't decide, "Hey, let's freak out more and trample somebody!" xD Thanks for the vid and for raising awareness about this. ;)

As someone who lost the person they love more than anyone to a TBI (not riding related and not his fault, but the end result doesn't matter), let me say this: IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT YOU. Take a moment and think about the people who care about and possibly depend on you, children, significant others, close friends, parents, and know: your "choice" may leave them shattered, battling the horrors of PTSD, and forever grieving...because you didn't want to mess up your hair. Are you willing to lay that on their shoulders when your horse trips over a clump of grass? #mindyourmelon #ridersforhelmets

I learned to ride horses in Germany. At the riding school helmets were required. It became a second nature to always wear one. Even today, 40 years later, I feel awkward on a horse without a helmet (rarely happens). In all those years I've been riding all kinds of horses in all kinds of situations. In younger years I've been hitting the sand hundreds of times. Very rarely did I hit my head, but at least twice the helmet prevented injury. Once when I got smacked head first into the wooden wall of the arena by a horse that usually was too lazy to buck at all. Second time when starting a young pony. She got distracted by a horse in the pasture, made a sharp turn and I lost my balance. I fell into the mud all right, but didn't let go of the reigns and got hit by a hoof on the helmet.

Research done by the National Coronial Information System shows from between July 2000 and June 2012, 98 horse-related deaths have occurred, 28% of those people were wearing helmets and only 14% weren't. Wearing a helmet does not mean you will be safe, it might reduce the chances of serious injury if you fall, but it wont stop injury all the time. A helmet is designed to help with a sudden and short impact like a fall, but if a horse were to step on the helmet when you fall the helmet could break and splinter. I have a friend that actually would have died if he had been wearing a helmet because of the pressure put onto his head when the horse he was riding fell and landed on him, the helmet would have fractured and done even more damage and potentially killed him.

I always thought that helmets were a bother, they are annoying and get your head sweaty in the hot weather, but it will REALLY protect your head if you have a bad enough fall. I fell off just yesterday and I landed on my head, and I had my helmet on LUCKILY, and the outcome of the fall was would have been much worse if I wasn't wearing my helmet. I only had a headache for an hour or so, and I pulled some muscles in my neck, but other than that I'm fine. I'm so so SO happy I was wearing my helmet, if I weren't I could have cracked my head open, got a concussion, or worse. So please, MIND YOUR MELON!!!

Could you pleae do a video on body protectors as I think that too many people don't wear them and you never know when a horse could stand on your back (happened to me once luckily I haven't ever ridden without a body protector but people don't realise how important it is to wear them.

I never jump without my body protector! i dont care if im only doing trot poles... i am 155cm and weigh 40kg, my horse is an Oldenburg warmblood 16.2hh and 700-750kg. shes the sweetest thing but like they said, it can happen anywhere, any time. a bit of extra sweat is better then not walking again

I have a Charles Owen helmet and I love it!! I love how it looks and I feel very professional in it... I will never ever ride without a helmet!! No matter what! And as long as I’m there nobody else is going to be on a horse without one! Even if it’s “just a pony ride” stuff happens and one the damage is done, it’s done and theres no going back!!

I always wear a helmet when I ride, because I got bucked off once and landed on my head.. We went to the doctor right afterwards and she told me that if I hadn't used one I would've been dead.. My helmet was almost flat at the top...

I ALWAYS have a helmet! When I went trail riding with my dad at a place north from us I asked if I could use my helmet and they said if I was 18 or over I didn't need one. My reply "I've fallen too many times to know that I shpuld always habe my helmet. I have been lucky because I've had mine on every timw I've taken a nasty spill." So I put mine on and about 1/2 hr later the horse I was on kept backing up and almost took me off an egde down a steep hill into a creek. Luckily I had the reigns to act as a crop but if we had gone down hill I at least had my helmet!!!!!

i had a fall off my mare one day, was coming into a jump and last minute she just decided to jump the height of the jump-wing. i got a little air born over the jump and didnt want to come down and land on her back and hurt her so i rolled off. Was wearing my Helmet and body protector. Got a concussion and busied Tail bone. BUT my melon is still attached to my head and i didnt break my ribs. very grateful, and then went and got a new helmet

My friend had a fall where the horse flipped onto her and she was wearing a helmet and the horses withers hit the helmet and got stuck in the groves in it and it push her head into the ground and she fractured her skull, several doctors told her that if she hadn't had the helmet on the wither would have bumped her head and slid past her and she wouldn't have been so severely injured. But I still ride with a helmet, and she does sometimes.

Such a great video! There is nothing more annoying than pulling up to a trainers barn and seeing them riding without a helmet! The excuse of "it's just flat work" is moot.

I was always the type of person who was like 'meh, to each their own' about a helmet and rarely wore one myself. I never really had any mishaps that landed me on the ground while riding but then one day... I had a normally quiet horse get spooked unexpectedly and decided that he was going to put on a galloping rodeo and there wasn't a hell of a lot I could do to stay on, unfortunately and between the saddle and ground it was like slow motion horror. I was like "Damn it, I wish I was wearing a helmet." Since I wasn't wearing one I opted to throw my arm up under my head to give it some cushioning to keep my skull from making a very brutal impact against the ground. Still, mangled the hell out of my shoulder and tore the crap out of my rotator cuff which requires surgery to fix but at least I still have my brain in tact. What would have been better would be not destroying my head OR my shoulder, so I fully agree #mindyourmelon .

could you do a video on body protector and air jackets? my air jacket has saved me quite a few times, i'm lucky that i've only had a few bumps on my head, but i've been very close to breaking my neck and ribs out doing some cross country

As a die hard helmet wearer in Wyoming I've heard it all. The peer pressure to take it off keeps coming. I usually ask them how many concussions they've had, and then I share my total: 0! I have left mine at home a few times and it is a very uncomfortable and odd feeling to be up there without it. The other times it bugs me to see people without a brain bucket is when they are gentling untouched horses. And they'll let their kids go without, too. Darwin, anyone?

My helmet has saved my life, I wish I had kept it to show to people who don't wear one. I was riding a very kid safe lesson horse when something spooked him and he bucked strait up in the air. I was still a young rider then and flew right into the air and landed straight on my head. I was lucky not to break anything except my helmet. It cracked from temple to temple and if I was not wearing it that crack would have been in my head. I was able to walk away with a minor concussion and some bone busing.

my cousin got bucked off his horse and it did more damage to his head then if he would not have been wearing one it was a good quality one also so i personally am not a big fan of wearing helmets but if i am doing something new or just learning something then i will wear one (and of coarse for shows)

Wayyy to late for this but I had to comment on this legendary video. Anyway, onto my story. Recently, I was working a very green horse Albie. Long story short, I gave a bad line and he scared himself just before the jump. I was flung forward and landed on the pole. I then didn't get let go of the rein, he went off galloping and I was kicked on my head. Right where my helmet was. If I wasn't wearing my helmet then I would of been good as dead. A few days ago I fell of my horse while jumping and hit my head. I went to the hospital and was diagnosed with a big concussion. My helmet saved my life. The doctors kept asking was I wearing a helmet and did it crack. It broke a bit but was a small price to pay to replace it. My mom took a picture of me lying on a hospital bed and I hadn't took my helmet off yet. #mindyourmelon

I had a really bad fall last fall. I hit my head and I was barely concious after that. Had I not had my helmet that fall would have landed me in the hospital. Just because your a good rider doesn't mean you can see the future and expect the refusal or spook.
