Because the open world looks like a bad PS3 game, the land gameplay looks like a bad mobile base building game, and their "gRoUnDbREaKinG" feature of letting your earn assets for other games that don't even exist yet is literally the same thing Axie Infinity was promising but never delivered on...

For private beta Zero yes you will need a plot but when game is released every Illuvium game will be free to play
