Or sometimes there's a cost involved, or there are other fights lined up and using the ultimate stage immediately means it can't be used on the big baddie later on (but of course drama demands it has to be used early on and then that's a situation the hero has to get out of).

For Nazo Unleashed for instance, Nazo couldn't go Perfect because they kept stopping him from reaching the Emeralds, Sonic and Shadow didn't go Hyper because they didn't know what they were up against until they got floored (and then, to their credit, they immediately went for the Unification thing as soon as they powered-up, so, no time wasted), and Perfect Nazo only realized he could just absorb the powered-up negative energy mid-fight. I still agree with you overall, though. At least personally, I've seen Shounens that take the power escalation for granted and don't actually write their story for it to make sense. Eeeespecially nowadays. I guess I can't blame 'em too much, though; especially if it's designed to be a parody, like here.

I love it so much and its what both got me into creating an animation AND becoming a huge sonic fan. But i gotta admit, the way some fans have tried to treat it as if its peak fan fiction has always kinda bugged me tbh.
