i’ve watched what feels like a million video essays about minecraft and they almost always feel very samey. the game has been so popular for so long that everything about it feels obvious or given. this deep dive analysis into the mechanics and how the gameplay actively evolves as you progress is so refreshing and well done! criminally underrated channel.

I was worried my video wouldn't add much to the conversation given how popular minecraft is, so this comment means a lot, thank you!

This is the exact kind of video I've been looking for on minecraft for so long. For such a prolific game its surprising we don't have more long form analysis videos about it. Loved the video and the pacing, you got me through the worst part of my shift thank you.

Just started this video but I wanted to let you know that I've been binging your vids ever since your Mother 3 Analysis was in mu recommended feed. Loved your coverage of the Mother trilogy as well as your Undertale video. You have such a calm and pleasant demeanor and your writing is great. I know these videos must take ages to make so I wanted to let you know that I appreciate your content and know that this hard work will pay off for you. Keep up the great work 😁

01:52:55 This skipping of a bunch of updates and feeling lost among all the new additions is something I can greatly relate to. The last version I really played on was 1.13, which was when all the ocean stuff like corals was new. Now, I'm always a bit hesitant considering to play again because there is so much that has changed and that I do not understand. Maybe this is just "Stuff was better in the past"-talk old people normally get into, but I preferred when updates were a bit more quaint in scope. It just feels so overwhelming nowadays, even though some features are admittedly really cool looking.

have you played don't starve? It focuses a lot more on the survival aspects instead of the self expression aspects, survival being a constant, diferentelly from minecraft that the survival aspects disappear when you learn to make a bed

i played it with some friends a decent amount like 5 or 6 years ago, though we never made all that much progress due to how unforgiving it can be. it was pretty fun though, i think if i dedicated time to it and made a concerted effort to learn how to navigate its survival mechanics i'd really enjoy it. however, i do think the super distinct mood and art style hurt it to some extent. it can be so dour that i didn't always feel up to playing it if that makes sense.

Awesome video! I had some thoughts regarding the nether portal vs. other gate kept knowledge. Honestly, I am surprised at how eloquent your transitions and explanations to Minecraft's gate kept knowledge is discussed. The criticism is done very well because it brings nuance to two views of the obtuseness of Minecraft. First there are those who want information and progression to be more explicit in Minecraft. This includes crafting menus where recipes are given if you have a single one of its items. This would also be some way to communicate things you may not know about in advance or after it occurs once. The other group embraces the obscure nature of minecraft. They believe you should either use a wiki if you need it or just play the game and discover as you go. The mysterious nature is part of their enjoyment. Your discussion of the game demonstrates that Minecraft has been towing this line in risk of losing its identity. Something I never really appreciated and I think that was very insightful. Fundamentally, lots of Minecraft is perfect where knowledge is learned by the whims of the RNG world via exploration. You can interact with it as little as you'd like, but that also reduces the amount of mechanics and items you can try. This is great, but as you mention, some things are just plain obtuse for no discernable reason. Inventory shortcuts, critical hits, etc should definifely be illustrated. This could be done through achievements that have explicit instructions on performing these actions so that gameplay is barely affected. You could also throw up a crappy text blurb in the pause menu if need be. I personally disagree however on the Nether. I think its fair to apply your previous criticisms to the obscurity of activating the Nether, but I think the Nether is a reasonable example of Minecraft purposely obscuring it. The fact it has barely ever had more hints about its existence through the tens of updates show that it is a deliberate action by the developers. I think this is cool because the Nether is a really scary place when you first encounter it. Even as a kid, despite being prepared, I had nightmares from the sounds and visuals for a liftle while. So keeping it a mystery that the player has to willingly submit themselves to is really good in my opinion. However, I believe the issue lies in to the real fact that the Nether is tied to general progression because you need Eyes of Ender to progress toward a stronghold and activate the ender portal. This means the nether should be somewhat communicated to the player. I believe the perfect fix is to keep adding hints like the broken portal. I think the nether should have more references like the chance to encounter schematics at a Village for a portal depending on if there is an occultist type villager. Additionally abandoned mines deep in caves could have a chance of a book showing the schematics to a working portal and showing you need to light a fire. This could be done with obtuse symbols that the player works out are stand ins for fire and obsidian. Just my thoughts on this video and a certain topic from it. Great job.

glad you enjoyed the video, and thanks for such a thoughtful comment! I pretty much completely agree with you. I originally intended to touch on achievements more, but once i looked into it found they guide/hint at the experience way less than i remembered, i think using them more would be a pretty unobtrusive way to help players out. In terms of obscuring the nether, i totally get that. the mystery around it definitely heightens the experience of entering and exploring it. More hints in the vein of the broken portals would be a good way of getting players there without a wiki, and i really like your idea of a village having schematics or something like that, thanks again :)
