Today i show you a very simple, fully automatic kelp farm! This farm can be any size you like, and doesn't use bone meal! The base version of this farm produces 14k kelp per hour, but you can expand it to get the output you like:) Sorry for the long tutorial, like to go in depth! But thank you for watching! It took forever but I finally got it to work! I made a smaller 20 block long one and it's already filling chest after chest. Little tip when it comes to the one's that shoot out the back, put all of the hoppers into a dispenser running on a clock into a bubble column. Then use another ice/water transport to add it to your storage system out front. It helps to keep everything in the same place, especially if you wire the clock up to the front of your farm as well! Thanks for the video! I look forward to implementing it into my survival world!
@zarda1484

Just throw it right back into the tank and let it float up with the rest. You can use an item elevator or similar circuit but instead of dumping it into a hopper just eject it into the water.

so one, thank you for this, it taught me a lot. this is a shorter part of the comment but it's no less sincere for it. two, i'd really love to see time lapse videos of building this stuff in survival, or at least a more layer-by-layer approach. a couple of the cuts obscured some building you did between them in a way that was confusing -- in this video, the return station was kind of confusing to orient, and having an overhead of layer 1 (all 48 blocks at sand level) and layer 2 would have been really helpful

@@Kurai0 Honestly not long at all. Just grow some bamboo and afk it then chop it down, plant and keep doing until you have enough. That was the worst part. An Iron Farm helps, Along with Mining in a Mesa for the Gold for the Rails. Took maybe 3-4 hours. I do already have a slime farm so that wasn't hard. But even mining out part of a slime chunk, Backing farm enough away, Then going back, you can gather enough slime in a short while. I used a super smelter of Sorts to get all of the glass up, while Afking for the Bamboo and Extra Iron from the Iron Farm.. I should mention I'm a Resource Gatherer/Hoarder in my World and only used a little to build the Bamboo farm to go with this, so I didn't need to gather as much as someone starting from Scratch.

Just built this underground next to the underground bamboo farm. Literally 1 block separating them. Also, it's underneath my super smelter. It's all covered in glass so I can walk around everywhere and see it. Waiting for the kelp to grow now, but it'll be sick having everything so close together. The water streams are both on top of each other, just barely at different y levels, also encased in glass so you can see it from above. Love it. Thank you silent!

@mhmtitan6287 Yep, working perfect! Sometimes, the flying machine gets stuck halfway, but that's because I uploaded the chunk while it was moving. My bamboo farm does the same. It's easy to fix, though. Just update one of the observers (try both if the first one doesn't fix it), and the flying machine will go right back to its home.

@@mhmtitan6287 The bamboo farm, along with the kelp farm, makes for automatic dried kelp, and I just turn that into dried kelp blocks for my super smelter. Each dried kelp block burns around 20 (I think) blocks in a normal furnace. Amazing for free and lazy fuel.

just a heads up for anyone playing on 1.20 or newer you must use some type of clock if you built this 18 blocks high like in the video.i recommend a hopper clock with all spaces filled to get the most time and a normal clock on the return station. the reason for this is because kelp no longer grows to just 15 high anymore but will grow as high as 25 or more. the best way to make sure you get the water source blocks from the base to 15 blocks high is to place ice at the 15 height mark and cover the whole space like you did to fill the farm and let thee kelp grow then built the hopper clock. once the kelp is grown break the ice and connect the hopper clock(or whatever clock you used that has a good delay). once this is done you will not have to worry about breaking your farm because your kelp grew to much. you will however have to make sure you don't log out when you flying machine is moving to prevent breaking it and having to reset it.

First fill the first level with water plant your kelp then when you put down water sources on level 15 i used ice but i put it on level 17 placed torches on the ice let it all melt covered it all with wood slabs put down the middle row of water break all the slabs just makes that last bit a bit more convenient.But thanx for tutorial.

For the people who are planning to build this, build this now! It works absolutely perfect, excellent as of 15-05-2020 And for those who are asking why the kelps are not floating, just make sure they are all fully grown I've took 5 hours of work, 3 flying machine rebuilt, 2 returning station rebuilt and 1 draining the whole farm But it works flawlessly and it provides about 4500 kelps per full harvest! Edit: I have also built the bamboo farm! It's a perfect combination you'll not regret it

Just made this earlier this month. Kelp now grows at random heights, up to 25-26 instead of only 15 when the tutorial was made. I made this taller, at least 28 blocks of water sources, so that the flowing water on top never gets interrupted by growing kelp. I kept the flying machine on a button so it’s only running when all the chunks are loaded. It rarely needs more than one pass each time I am at the farm. I have a bunch of other stuff I am working on in the area, so the kelp is always growing. The 25 growth height starts where the kelp has been chopped by the flying machine. Thank you for the tutorial Silent. 👍
@phredshunkie3487
@phredshunkie3487 Жыл бұрын
Since the kelp height is random, I would not build the center wall or plant all the kelp until the all but the top layer of water sources have been added. I would place a water source every other block on two sides one block below the top. Then, plant kelp under each source and manually add kelp to the top until you reach the desired height. It was a pain following the tutorial and manually adding kelp to the desired height in all blocks on both sides of the wall.

When did they make leaves immovable objects in bedrock? Last I checked, only beacons, obsidian and bedrock were immovable in this edition. And when did they make slime blocks redstone powered? I haven't seen any info in the change logs alluding to this being possible or I would've been doing this a long time ago. I seriously hope they make leafstone possible on bedrock too. Would definitely improve underwater redstone builds and make them easier and cheaper to work with. When do you think the new block updates are coming out?

@@silentwisperer 🤯🤯🤯 I've always seen this as a thing in java and came to the conclusion it didn't work on bedrock as most of java stuff hasn't worked. Tried using slime blocks as redstone gimmicks and stuff but they never worked other than on pistons. Looks like I did something wrong with the slime lol I've used leaves on a slime block chain to conserve pistons and push sugarcane. They always retracted with the slime blocks. Haven't used this design in favor of another cheaper build. Must've been a glitch during that time then. This just opened a whole new door for the builds I actually want to make, or at least try. Thanks silent for bringing that flying machine to light as well. I've been having problems trying to make one work for a while and eventually gave up thinking it was another java thing that wouldn't work on bedrock. Can't wait to make a REAL sugarcane, bamboo, kelp farm setup. Couple questions: do slime blocks stick to tilled soil and make them convert back to dirt or would they slide over them like leaves because of the shorter height? In hermitcraft, I've seen them build a trapdoor trigger to send the flying machines back and forth. Would it be possible for this to work on bedrock so that one part of the machine doesn't get shoved to the side as shown in knights video? Thanks again and great video 😁

I wouldn't use a clock to start this unless you're doing a long afk, flying machines get stuck a lot. I would advise to never use an auto launch on a flying machine unless you're cool with constantly fixing it which takes longer over time than manually starting the machine when the plants are ready.

Great video. But what I don't understand is why you used the packed ice for the water stream carrying items to the storage system. You've got seventeen blocks of height, so why don't you just take the water down a block every seven blocks? Is the extra glass worth more than the ice? If you don't have a silk-touch pick, the staircasing of the water stream would seem the best bet.

It wouldn’t be infinitely expandable like that.
@kaguya6900
@kaguya6900 5 жыл бұрын
@@everettfletcher2162 True, but it would be at least expandable to about 77 or 84 blocks depending on how many chests you want to put in for storage. 77 blocks would get you a stack of five double chests. And if you want to go longer (how long do you want to go with this?!), you could always have a second staircase. You could have one staircase starting on one side, one on the other, and connect in the middle to get a farm up to about 150 or so blocks long max. But practically, it isn't really infinitely expandable, is it? Once you get over about four chunks away, redstone stops working, crops stop growing, and your flying machine will break. Really, the most you can hope for on something like this is about 110-120 blocks, and then you have to be sure to stay in the middle of it all the time it's working. In practical reality you're limited to about 64 blocks, including the flying machine reverse stations assuming you don't want any chunks to stop responding when you're on the other end of the farm. For practical purposes, you'd probably want to limit the farm to about 50 blocks just to be sure.
@silentwisperer
@silentwisperer 5 жыл бұрын
Its more expensive to do the stair stepping, your talking like stacks of stacks of blocks, compared to just 3 ice a sign and a slab. If you are going to be building big farms like this, you should be decently advanced in your world, and silk touch should be the least of your worries. Id think the slime would be the bigger complaint 🤷 If you do need help getting silk touch, than villagers is usually the way to go. But that can take a lot of work, so maybe you just need a good exp farm and some book. Either way, would suggest checking out the bedrock tutorials playlist, your bound to find something there thats helpful:)

@@silentwisperer Thank you so much for taking the time to read and reply, So it was about expense. Okay, got it. Yeah, for some reason, over three different worlds, I am having terrible luck getting my hands on a silk-touch pick axe. But I do enjoy the grindy branch mining, so I have no problem with tons of extra blocks. And although glass looks better, I don't think there is any reason why you can't build the farm out of cobble or the not-very-useful blocks you get from mining like diorite or granite. So blocks, for me, are no problem. By the by, you can mitigate the amount of blocks needed for the water staircase by building two of them starting at either end and meeting in the middle. It still takes a lot more blocks than your design, but not nearly as many as if I tried to build a stream starting at one end and descending continually down to the other end. I agree about the slime, but, as opposed to the silk-touch tool, I suppose I've been lucky in that regard. I've found slime chunks in my branch mines. So all in all, depending on what you've been lucky enough to obtain, it isn't really that "advanced" a farm. You need a whole lot of blocks for building, some Nether quartz and redstone for the redstone contraptions, clay for the terracotta, a good source of slime for the slime blocks, kelp (of course), sheers for the leaves, buckets for the water, dirt or sand, chests and hoppers, a few obsidian blocks (which you will have to have access to if you were able to go to the Nether to get the quartz)…am I missing anything?

@@kaguya6900 time, patience and feather falling 4 boots so you're not immediately killed by a mob when you fall. Also scaffolding wouldn't hurt either if you can afford it - the new one if that even interests you. Personally, stepping would work better by using extra materials of the same type. You save space in your inventory by not using slabs, ice, signs and all the extra water for each "bridge". Its only slightly more costly depending on how long you're going because of the outer wall for the item drops and retaining the water in its channel... unless you build it into the ground. Not only will you save on materials, you'll gain that much more as well. Essentially it's all in how you want to build it and how much materials you want to invest, and if you can afford it. The poor version is to build in ground. If you can afford it, build it above ground using this method. If you want to spend a lot or a ton of materials, use the step or use hoppers (respectively). Or just go crazy and make a wild design of your own imagination within your budget. I'll probably just stick to a tiered 16x16 design to avoid the mysterious disappearing items on chunk borders bedrock magic thank you 😁 That'll be a nice tutorial: chunk building anything. Farms, redstone, buildings, etc. That's what I'd like to see (after all, slime is one of the most expensive items in bedrock).

Just built this on my world underground 1.18. Biggest issue I had was getting the fly machine to not get stuck on something and break, make sure if you add hoppers that the flying machine works after placing them. Also, buttons works instead of the pressure plates, didn’t see any de-spawning kelp on the walls so I don’t think chests will fix anything AND when you are filling up the top sides to create the solid water source blocks, you will get a prompt to fill your bucket even if your bucket is full, I think it’s a glitch but it’s telling you it’s already a source block so check the next block, instead of counting how many spots you’ve placed water that’s what saved me so much time. @@alexvarv8226 I did exactly that in my survival world. It's true it requires manual intervention from time to time to craft up the kelp blocks but since it produces more than it uses, after a while you wind up with more kelp blocks than you'll ever need. Also, while bamboo is fully auto-farmable, it's kind of a terrible fuel source. Because it burns so fast, to distribute it around a system fast enough to keep up with a bunch of furnaces running simultaneously, you pretty much need to use water streams running over hoppers - which means a lot of items floating around in the water (lag) and a lot of open hoppers (more lag). Because kelp blocks burn for a while, it's much easier to make a distribution system that will keep up with a furnace array.

I see building this in the near future. However, saying blue ice is cheaper than chests is certainly questionable. 2 wood logs vs 81 ice blocks each!? I'd say chests are way, way cheaper. Or even comparing to packed ice, it's 9 packed ice vs 2 wood logs, and packed ice takes way longer to break than wood and you have to destroy iceburgs to get them (having first located an ice biome), and movement on iceburgs is slow and annoying . And back to the ice, that's 81 durability off your pickaxe per blue ice vs only 2 off your axe. And you can collect multiple stacks of logs in mere minutes, especially by bonemealing 2x2 spruce trees. Regardless, looks like a fun farm and I think I'll put it on my short list of upcoming projects. This, and the bamboo farm, an ice farm, and an end highway... after I finish my gold farm. That is unless we get a decent iron farm going, seems like I get far better rates just by caving than any Bedrock iron farm currently out there. Or maybe a mob grinder... Man, there are so many fun things to build.
