I actually think that being able to say "down" is better than not. You can play through without killing the fun (if you accidentally say "up" and then "down", you'll lose HP from height falling ;D), but if you can't say down, you're just uselessly stuck after every mistake, and you are unable to move forward at all. Which is.. Not fun
