The British Royal Navy imposed a successful blockade on Germany, severely restricting its access to vital resources. The use of submarines, especially by Germany with its U-boats, led to the sinking of numerous merchant and passenger ships, including the infamous sinking of the RMS Lusitania in 1915.Warfare Beyond Europe: World War I was a global conflict, with fighting taking place in various regions outside of Europe. The Middle East, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific all saw military engagements involving European powers. The Ottoman Empire entered the war on the side of the Central Powers, leading to campaigns such as the Gallipoli Campaign (1915-1916), where Allied forces attempted to secure a sea route to Russia through the Dardanelles.The Home Front: The war had profound effects on civilian populations. Governments on both sides introduced measures such as rationing, propaganda, and conscription to support the war effort. The US officially entered the war on April 6, 1917, on the side of the Allies.Turning Points and End of the War: The war saw numerous battles and offensives, with both sides trying to gain an advantage. However, several key events marked turning points in the conflict. The entry of the United States provided fresh troops and resources to the Allies. The 1918 Spring Offensive by the Germans aimed to win the war before American forces could fully arrive but ultimately failed. The Allies, bolstered by American reinforcements, launched a series of successful offensives known as the Hundred Days Offensive, which led to the collapse of the Central Powers.Armistice and Aftermath: On November 11, 1918, an armistice was signed, bringing an end to the fighting. The Treaty of Versailles, signed on June 28, 1919, officially ended the war. The treaty imposed harsh penalties on Germany, including territorial losses, disarmament, and reparations, setting the stage for economic hardship and political instability in Germany, which would contribute to the rise of Adolf Hitler and World War II.Casualties and Legacy: World War I resulted in an estimated 10 million military deaths and 7 million civilian deaths.
