The water physics in Terraria being able to flood caves is exactly what originally attracted me to that game, after being an avid player of early Minecraft. Love it when a game lets you play around with water flow and drain volumes until each other.

I'm guessing realistic water is exponentially easier to both model and balance in a 2D game.
@dafrandle5 ай бұрын
@@ekki1993 i think the thing that makes it the easiest for terraria is that the whole world is a finite size that you can realistically get to - makes it possible to simulate all the water on the map - there is no not loaded / generated chunks that contain an unknown amount of liquid
@thegoldenatlas7534 ай бұрын
@@dafrandleThe key part is there's an entire dimension of math left out. 3D Vector math is a hell of alot more demanding than 2D vector math. And this is cellular automatons so your talking about each space checking a exponentially greater area around it in 3d than it would in 2d.
@dafrandle4 ай бұрын
@@thegoldenatlas753 yes you are correct. even so, if a minecraft world was only as big as a terraria world i think this would still be achievable with playable framerates. its just a hunch - i dont have any numbers to back it up with.
@filipbehul13632 жыл бұрын
Interesting fact. In real life, the water can flow thru most types of stone, because its porous. If it was real physics, in this setup the caves would flood even without the opening. There needs to be a clay layer between the sand/gravel layer and the stone layer for keeping the caves under the water dry.

That fact that air gets trapped in the caves too made this even better.
@squiddler77312 жыл бұрын
Technically that's the easiest way to go about making something like this. The only way to fill the air pockets would be for the water to move upwards from below, and calculating the air pressure for when that should happen is even more complicated than just having water flow downwards and sideways
@therilyncobrin23722 жыл бұрын
yeah, I was watching for that.
@KiemPlant2 жыл бұрын
I'd imagine it would be way easier to implement it like that. If you would actually make it realistic then yes, air would get trapped inside of pockets with no adjacent air or a way to escape to the surface. The thing being that air actually gets compressed depending on how high the pressure of the water is, which for obvious reasons wasn't implemented.

There was a mod that worked on 1.12.2 if I recall correctly, but the lag it generated was horrible, it let gather water on lakes after rain, flow down from glaciers, realistics rivers that ended on the ocen (except no actual physics like in the video), also the mod included water erosion, seen so many poor villagers lose their homes... what if ocean biomes would refill themselves slowly as rain falls, but only oceans. or even better, rain creates water and you need to make storm drains so your builds dont get flooded. it rarely rains in deserts, and dirt and sand absorb water and turn into mud, quicksand (desert), or waterlogged sand (beach) and dry out over time. mud dries faster near plants including trees, and trees would have to be made of a special kind of block which looks like regular logs, but drop logs without the water absorbent properties. holy moly i’ve turned this into a rant imma stop now.

Lol imagine spawning in an island in a huge ocean and you can't literally move for hours because there is just so many water movement that it's clogging up the entire resources of your computer just to submerge a cave you will never ever explore anyway. So I bet it isn't a good idea to implement to minecraft, maybe for now. Also, I think it just wouldn't be fun if a build you did suddenly gets submerged with water by accident after you break blocks above it which has water on it. Although this does give us some cool other features. Water pipes? We can literally make water pipes or etc. and can transfer water over distances. How that could be useful, I don't know. But if such a feature becomes implemented to Minecraft in the near future, we would need something that can transfer water as well, in case accidents happen to our build that can literally submerge it which spoils the fun.

honestly it would be dope to have this in minecraft. Water has so much unused potential in the game, all everyone does is make a 2x2 pool for an infinite source. Water physics could make water a scarce resource just as much as a extreme hazard, which could make some really fun scenarios. Some things would have to be changed a bit, like a proper water cycle for some semblance of renewable water, pipe blocks that can push or suck water to different areas, and an alternative for how water is used to scale down such as a rope that works like scaffolding, but it extends downward instead of upward. I need to play this mod bro, it would be so much fun btw, I love your water physics videos. They’re oddly satisfying for my caveman brain lol, it’s dope

very nice, but on a programming aspect, it might be nice to use a touch of recursion so that if you have a level of water blocks, it will branch out to all recursively adjacent water blocks and pull from the farthest or has a level of water higher than itself, that way you wont have the dangling puddles left one block away from a dropoff. But that would probably be far more resource demanding and the way it is now is still good regardless.

Nice. Next step. Calculate the airpresure and if it can escape for it to make way for the water. Like, you have a glass tube in the form of a "U", you poor water in one side, it's going to even out on the other side (basically what's happening here). But after emptying it, hold one side shut with a cork, finger or anything so it's sealed. When you poor water in the other side, it'll only fill the plugged up side till where the bend of the "U" comes around. Bcs air is (a combination of different types of) gas and fills some space. The only when for the water to fill up the plugged up side, is to have a larga (and I mean LARGE) ammount of pressure to compress that air (gas) so it takes less space and gives more space to the water.
@13KuriMaster2 жыл бұрын
I see 1 issue with the realism here........ in order for the water to fill an area, the air that is already in that area needs to be able to leave the location. I do not see any spots for the air to go... unless it can go through what I presume are the Barrier blocks the structure is surrounded by.

Anyone else remember how water worked in the alpha? I remember servers where they’d place a block of water or lava up high, and the game was to rush and build shelter before the map filled up, and then you’d try expanding your house while the water was trying to fill in all available space.

Good luck making infinity water source here lol

Love it... but also, it would be interesting to add air as a thing, so a raised section of cave cannot be filled if all exits for air are sealed~
@grimnott2 жыл бұрын
that would be so laggy
@zombiehacker194111 ай бұрын
That would be either laggy or impossible to do

Air is already a block in minecraft, however it is pretty underwhelming despite being the most important block.

Amazing concept aside, it feels really weird now to see the pre 1.17 ore textures since 1.17 has been out for almost a year now!

Love this! Definitely great to see realistic water in Minecraft while still keeping the blocky formation of the water :D
@filipbehul13632 жыл бұрын
Looks nice. But I miss realistic stone. Most kinds of stone are porous, permeable, therefore the caves would get flooded even before creating an opening in the ceiling.
@moresnet99312 жыл бұрын
This would be extremely helpful for when you just wanna fill holes and caves up in the terrain with water

This reminds me of an old deleted game called The blockheads. Though it was more like Terria with a 3d Effect, the way the water drained and filled the cave completely opened those memories of playing the game on my phone

imagine draining an ocean monument with this. Just dig an area around the monument and then let the water flow in it

Honestly this mechanic would be really cool as an extra challenge when mining underwater. One wrong block mined and the cave floods.

man. i've been waiting for something like this since djoslin's finite liquid mod. and it even seems to use the existing water block rather than trying to create & implement an entirely new water entity to replace existing water. frankly, i'd given up hope that i'd ever see a relatively modern implementation of that mod. this is really damn cool.

Could make an interesting sort of escape room challenge where the players need to find an escape route from a cave filling with water.
@user-ui5kl8ig9m2 жыл бұрын
Угу, но более интересно посмотреть на выживание с этим модом, где люди сами себя начнут убивать, из-за сломанных блоков и большого риска что это места затопиться и не будет свободного места как минимум,а максимум свободных блоков воздуха😂😂

Imagine causing an underwater cave-in while mining an ocean and you have to escape while it gets flooded completely. Then you step out to see the cave system was so massive it drained the sea level by 1 block
