Here's a simple tutorial on how to make a working castle gate in Minecraft without command blocks! You can build this gate in survival Minecraft 1.16 and you can even hide all of the redstone!

I didn’t realize until after many tries how important it was to power the bottom with an observer. Simplifying things with just a button won’t work because the observer actually sends two pulses for when it sees the redstone turn on and off. Great tutorial, I’m learning a lot

I remember seeing doors like this on KZbin and not bothering to look up tutorials and making super expensive and slow versions. There would be messy redstone lines everywhere. And this was before observers. It's crazy to see how compact these doors can be now. Great tutorial.

Love that door! Thank you very much for that. I did notice one thing, to eliminate the delay in the torch tower (for those who prefer that), you could, instead of that tower, put down a sticky piston, put a bunch of slime blocks on top and a redstone block at the very top, just below the level where redstone is located. Now whenever you hit the button, the piston the bottom extends, pushing the redstone block to the same height as the redstone, powering it almost instantly.

I've been playing minecraft on the switch. I have set up the gate according to plan, but the sticky pistons are still having quasi-connection issues, particularly not letting go of the blocks (and some letting go when they shouldn't on the gate itself). Okay so I get about 4:10 in the vid, I've been following almost exactly as it shows, then when I place the dust on top it starts going apeshit with signals. Do you have an idea what causes this and how to fix it (java, survival, 1.16.3) Edit: I figured out the problem, I had to remove another layer of blocks from my wall. Probably should have built the door before the rest of the house.

what made you decide to use a piston based flip flop circuit instead of one without moving parts? easier to build/less resource requirements?

@@mysticat I think a piston-less design might be more reliable (no issues with quasi-connectivity), but it would also be silent. Perhaps some people like the "CLACK-CLUCK-KCHUNK" of mechanical mechanisms. I think one could use a T flip-flop in place of the piston one in this design for less resources, however.

Question: When I was testing these gates, I noticed that the gates were not fully closed when I pressed the button the 2nd and 4th time, leaving a 1 block gap open what did I do wrong here?

I had the same problem. Make sure the backs of all your observers are all covered up, that's what fixed it for me. They might be sending a signal and messing up the timing if left uncovered.

@Jake Smith It's not about the color of the gravel, it's about gravel/sand raising up the gate. You don't see real portcullises working like that(where ground under the gate raises up do lift it). But i get that it's limitations of Minecraft, and it probably couldn't be done other way.
